Now Public Top 10 User Generated Moments Gets Reported Widely
The Article by Racheal Nixon on Citizen Journalism coming of age in 2008 and the list of top ten moments for user generated news has got international mention and has been carried in multiple site across the Globe.
Various news agencies and internet news sites have carried the story titled " Mumbai attacks caps year for citizen journalism: NowPublic".
The sites that carried the list and Now Public's thoughts range from MSN News, Yahoo News, AFP, Khaleej Times, News Watch, Arab Times, International Business Times. The screenshots of the coverage are uploaded with the story and all the stories are linked with the names above. The fact that all these news outlets have taken the news is a proof itself that user generated content, esp. news is something that has come of age.
If you find any more coverage please upload them to this story. Thanks Rachel for positioning Now Public as a thought leader by initiating this!!
2008 witnessed an explosion in the ways we gather, share and consume news and information. No longer the preserve of a few, participatory media formats began to be widely used by anyone – whether protesters or politicians, concerned individuals or mainstream news outlets - wanting to get their message out and connect.
Among the most popular was microblogging service Twitter which showed its potential to distribute raw information almost instantly – whether on a large breaking news event affecting many people, such as the recent Mumbai attacks, or an issue affecting the individual such as the arrest of an American student in Egypt. Previously averse to using unfiltered information, mainstream news outlets took to using Twitter in their news coverage.

Citzen jouranalism is gaining ground, and it is creating tension for regular media outlet.

Citizen Journalism is not Highlighting though, nor Copying and pasting. It is what the word does say Journalism, meaning Original work not copying others and posting it.
If you noticed the top 10 moments of NP where great work and team effort as well as some really good CJ work and Original work not Copying and Pasting though.

Good point Paschen, you have been one of the Highlights creating new ways of connecting people to outstanding "Change themes". This is a real tough job and deserves the stamp "Creative content", especially your endurance in the comment section reply opened the way for crowd powered opinion building. Readers want to see themselves in Action at NP. I agree this is the hard work compared to easy screenshots (also important) but to create quality writing first and quantity later, you took the risk and incresed the level of NP. I am watching a slow growing acceptance in the Technology sector for crowd powered reports, they have to be different, but as I see with the CERN collider story "Frank and the magic machine" we entered in front of BBC indoor live interview information for the still scared Public. This may get critical for the Obama environment plans to implement. Sometimes we are thrilled by our different habits over the continents, but slowly we understand what the other culture hurts or what is the key message. That's a new world experience with passion, sorry with Paschen. Thanks to all the other "Creative content" writers for opening new doors for Readers and Writers.

New technologies or rather old and evolved technology and a wider range of users is changing the News, such as cell Phone, Camera Digital and WIFI transmission direct interface and voice messages and other system are and will keep on changing the news, yet the written form wont change to much for one Copy rights, some are getting enough of having their hard work being stolen and not remunerate for, some report and documentaries demand a large up front investment as well as energy, time and resources, those are the Articles that at times get copied in whole or part and stolen and not paid for, meaning those that steel those are actually like parasites that destroy the very host they feed on and once no one can afford to do real reporting any longer nor make documentary because they get stolen right left and centre then eventually there would be any thing to Copy and past nor to Highlight any longer as well, meaning the new media will dye with the old just delayed. Once that happened we will be back to a system of reporting and paying for it.
Some Press conferences and public meetings do already forbade Cell Phones and other electronic devices and allow only old fashion Reporter in. The more you abuse a system the more you end up with more regulations and more laws and penalties as well as restriction. That however does not worry to many since they do not think that far or do not care what so ever.
There is nothing wrong with Highlighting if it is done ethically and properly as NP does ask for it self by the way. Some Highlight post here are more then excellent and even better then the originals, those post usually use multiple sources and compare them to one another, they also research their subject in depth and add great resumes and comments to them those Post are the Once that make NP great and noticed by all, the copied and paste once no one really cares in the end. If you look at the 10 greatest moment of NP you noticed that there is some great Original work there as well as some model Highlights and direct Video and cell Phone feeds yet no copy and past nor any Mindless highlights either. Quality and ethics do still count and are what will make NP to be noticed and respected. Not theft though.

Are you Paschen II ? or( Paschen out of Zichi's time), some sold their ID, so I am not sure
Paschen, THE TECH PEOPLE ARE HAPPY IF THEY GET AT ALL ATTENTION. And I am the Idiot reporting for free on NP, getting not paid for it. So see the difference Tech industry starts Live webcast and reporting

SOLARLIFE, I do not think that any one is an Idiot here nor should any one feel so.
What most off us do is because we are involved and maybe even passionate about some thing. We share and we write about it or look things up and so on... Yet we do rely on those that report the news as well like the main stream media. The difference is the new media such as Cell Phones and Web Cam ... Those will and are changing the way direct news and events are reported and broadcast. Like Television changed Radio and Radio changed the press or added to it, we add to it and maybe even give it a more critical exposure with comments and by being able to highlight several some times opposing views or studies in order to assist and help get a clearer and better or even more educated view of any given issue. That is the power of the Internet. We still need in depth researcher, War zone Reporter and Analyst though.
We can make the news better, yet we are not making the news for the most part any way. The highlights are when we have a direct Cell Phone feed or Web Cam from any given event where we are much faster then the media could ever be. Yet this has to be followed up by good reporting techniques as well.
The other point we forget to often is the energy require to run search engines and internet feeds as well as the web, those are incredible and those are expensive and will even get more expensive unless supported by adds and big business. To the point that we may down the road not be able to use the Internet as much as we do today since energy cost are going up and more people are making less today then a decade ago. All those factors are not taken into account in this sort of media today and may have a greater impact then we want to realize today.
I do not have a Crystal ball nor can I see the future, I have to speculate based on what Information and facts I have on hand and this through Logical thinking.

Good balanced summary Paschen. I ask myself, we have so many young writers why not trying a report, getting invited, make a photo, make a real neighbourhood report with original context.
I will try one again, if I find the time. For a real report with photos, video I need however 3 days to work on it. Hope zichi writing something again. The new media is also knowledge accumulation, that was never possible before. At NP you can have a look to your knowledge, all links here, like a scrab book.

Solarlife, in the end a quality news site can only be build by original material or copy and paste which like Paschen suggests is based on research of more than one source and becomes part of a well balanced post. Paschen good comments.....zichi

Zichi nice to hear from you, good summary interaction, happy hour to see you passing by, hope for more come back for some pepper in the discussion. We missing you. So we should not forget the Crowd powered writers that created and create NowPublic on a daily base. It is some sort of cybernetic interaction, like the birds fly south. Hello to Japan.

Ravi good work screenshots newspapers and links. Congratulations to Rachel NP.
My selection from Europe
was the war in Georgia, moments of tension, wrong gun fire reports from cnn and bbc. Online watch video webcams from Paschen and Vinny, saying the reality, nothing to see. CNN and BBC corrected in minutes the wrong war propaganda. The first online multimedia watch reporting killed the wrong war.
Second important developing story; the $700bn bailout what a tension for the world economy. Third the fight for the environment, clean energy, solar energy the weak point in the US got much attention. Much science attention got the BigBang collider machine, amazing moments. Not to forget the many good unique Africa reports .
Congratulations to all NP writers and editors to run mission impossible: Crowd powered news for many tastes 24hours around the globe. Not much time to sleep
