Yes Nowpublic made the announcement they soldout to The Examiner..but its for darn sure they did not tell you details about the New Boss.. Meet Billionare Philip Anschutz

This is how I feel about the sell out...it was a stab in the back, after the tough wrangling and win to oust the lying Bush administration, who got into power by stealing the election from the help of Mr.conservative billionaire Philip Anschutz; also owner of Clarity Media, and the Examiner, and now Nowpublic.

Born in Kansas in 1939, Anschutz later moved to Denver and
established the Anschutz Corp., whose operations focused on the oil
industry. By the mid-seventies, he owned oilfields in Montana,
Texas, Colorado and Wyoming as well as uranium and coal mines, and
cattle ranches.

After selling a large part of his holdings in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska,
to Mobil Oil, the company diversified. He currently heads up
Clarity Media Group, which owns the San Francisco Examiner and the
Washington Examiner, a free conservative-oriented tabloid in the
nation's capital. In mid-October, the company announced plans for
a spring launching of the Baltimore Examiner. (Clarity has
trademarked the Examiner name in 69 cities.)

Recent reports have Anschutz negotiating for control of the Knight
Ridder newspaper chain, the second-largest newspaper publishing
company in the U.S., which owns 32 dailies including the
Philadelphia Inquirer, Miami Herald and Kansas City Star.

During negotiations for the purchase of London's Millennium Dome,
the BBC dubbed him a "corporate vulture."

Anschutz is also the founder of the telecom company Qwest
Communications International Inc. According to the OC Weekly's
Nathan Callahan, in 2000, the company "encouraged employees to keep
their retirement savings in company stock even as senior executives
were bailing out, selling shares worth hundreds of millions of
dollars." SEC filings showed Anschutz had "unloaded 6.1 million
shares during that period."

After peaking at $64 per share, "six months later, the same share
was valued at 1.95 dollars." Anschutz made over $200 million in
profit, and was branded "the greediest executive in America by
Fortune magazine -- topping a list that included Gary Winnick,
founder of Global Crossing."

Qwest eventually reached a settlement that required a $4.4 million
payout to charity.

Anschutz is no stranger to philanthropy. In addition to generous
gifts to a host of mainstream charities, Anschutz-related entities
have helped bankroll a number of conservative groups including
Colorado for Family Values (CFV), the organization that sponsored
Amendment 2, Colorado's notorious anti-gay constitutional amendment
approved by the voters in 1992 and later overturned by the U.S.
Supreme Court.

Anschutz money also supported the Institute for American Values,
which campaigns for marriage and against single parenting; Enough
is Enough, which claims it is "Lighting the way to protect children
and families from the dangers of illegal Internet pornography and
sexual predators"; and Morality in the Media, established in 1962
"to combat obscenity and uphold decency standards in the media."

Between 1995 and 2000, according to OpenSecrets.org, a Web site
tracking political donations, the Anschutz Corp., and assorted
members of the Anschutz family, donated nearly $700,000 to the
Republican Party and its candidates.

http://ins.onlinedemocracy.ca/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=6498

Anschutz owns or has major interests in about 100 companies, including the following:

  • Forest Oil
  • Pacific Energy Group
  • 17% stake in Qwest Communications, which became a Baby Bell upon the purchase of US West
  • Regal Entertainment Group, the largest movie theater chain in the world with approximately 6,000 screens. Anschutz owns more than half of the company, which is a collection of former bankrupt chains.
  • Union Pacific Railroad (Anschutz is the company's largest shareholder, with a 6% stake.)
  • Clarity Media Group, a Denver-based Publishing Group which includes:[11]
    • The San Francisco Examiner (purchased in 2004)
    • The Washington Examiner, which was spun off from a number of D.C. area suburban dailies.
    • The Baltimore Examiner, which launched in April 2006 and was shut down in early 2009. (Anschutz has trademarked the name "Examiner" in more than sixty cities.)
    • Examiner.com, a hyper-local web portal where citizen journalists write on local topics, from news to blog-like stories.
    • The Weekly Standard (purchased in 2009)
  • The Oil & Gas Asset Clearinghouse, which is an auction company designed for the Oil & Gas Business
  • NRC Broadcasting, which owns a string of radio stations in Colorado.
  • Anschutz brought David Beckham to the United States. Beckham is now employed by Galaxy Media and plays on an Anschutz-owned soccer team, Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer.
  • The Anschutz Investment Company purchased LightEdge Solutions in February 2008. LightEdge is a business-to-business hosted services provider focused on Wide-Area-Networking, Voice-over-IP, Hosted Microsoft applications (Exchange, OCS, SharePoint), hosted servers/storage collocation cage and rackspace and Business Continuity Services.
  • On June 17, 2009, The Washington Examiner confirmed that the Examiner's parent company Clarity Media Group has purchased the Weekly Standard. [12]
  • And last but not least..let's now include Nowpublic.Com

My warning to Mike Tippet and Mr. Brody..and others at NowPublic..is that this guy Philip Auschutz is in my opinion no better than another Bernie Madoff. He has banking connections to Smith Barney, whom is tied to Citigroup..you know the guys involved in Enron's collapse, and ultimately the collapse of the Banks in the US.....engineered by Bush to arrange his bank bailout plan....which contributed to the collapse of the US economy...

In fact this Lawsuit was launched by Ex-Attorney General Elliot Spitzer of New York....where I believe Anschutz and other Repubicans setup Elliot in having him resign from Office....for female services...other than the crimes he was working on in concern those commited by Smith Barney and Billionaire Philip Anschutz.

Take note : Citigroup is responsible for pushing forward the repealling of the Glass Stengall Act...which regulated Banks in preventing them from using share holder money for derivatives trading.

http://news.lp.findlaw.com/hdocs/docs/worldcom/nyanschultz93002cmp.pdf.....

I don't know what happend to you guys at NP...who were strong and valiant and working hard to get our type of News to the Public.....because of the corruption that these Republicans commit....and now you sold us out?

You will probably ban me now....as you banned Moonwolf........I later found out....and was disappointed to see he left. He was a very good member here....and contributed greatly to get NP it's readership....and now to discover you have tied yourself to the very hypocrites we worked so hard to defeat in the last election?  I am utterly speechless.....with that dagger in our backs.  I think you guys have some explaning to do.....

Moving on at this time is shortsighted.  The NP staff and management has remained the same.  Let's give the staff that have been helpful to us the benefit of the doubt.  If we all leave they will be out of a job and the scenario you predict will in fact happen.  Let's keep this site strong by publishing our stories as we see fit, without political interference.  When that changes we have reason to leave.  It hasn't yet.

cowpoke, "the staff and management have remained the same." Well it didn't, this year many staff editors "left NP?" There was 24 hour coverage with an editor in India and another in London, to cover the time zones when Vancouver was asleep. There were less spam posts which they were dealt with more quickly.NP was probably faced, like many, by a financial crisis and probably tried very hard to find the right sort of buyer. After all, their jobs were on-the-line. In the end it was probably a case of sell or fold?Since I no longer post to NP and only read, and sometimes comment it does not matter to me. If the posts become boring then I will go elsewhere.Last year NP had many good posts and the comment and forum sections were very lively. I suppose the important aspect will be how many writers from the Examiner will also be NP editors posting the style of content they would prefer. And while NP is open to anyone to become a member the Examiner only operates in N. America.Just some thoughts....

J2B. For now there are still people posting from Asia and other places in the world.  Paschen has been busy at home because of the earthquakes.  He will be back once he has more time.  I have communicated with him.  Him and I don't share political views either but I consider Paxhen a friend.  We have always had civil debates, whether they were on comment thread or in PMs.  Debates on the issues help us all learn.  As I said Lefties have good ideas too as do Righties.  I just think in this case we need to hold our breath and see where this goes.  I reserve judgment on this.  Most of the editors that were here when I started writing here are still here.

Only they know if the conditions have changed for them.

No I am not leaving. I am tending to business.

djermano, that's good to know, unless you are banned but people like Paschen who was very busy here until the take over seems to have slowed somewhat?

Hmm to do a story on Soros would be a step in the right direction. But as I have always said in my Op.Eds about political parties, Right or Left Wing, they are all on the same bird of prey.  And though some think I am a right wing nut, I too miss Skeeter (Moonwolf), he was a lot of fun, we used to get into it all the time politically, but never personally, cause personally I consider him my friend.  Holy Tap Dancin Christ! Barry friends with a Lefty?  Yeah! I have a lot of friends who are lefty's most who I grew up with, so I really cannot change friends at this time in my life, My Mom was a longtime Hippie Lefty! Go Figure? What? You want me to abandon my Mom? Not Likely!

My Conservative views used to make my late mom gag, but one look from her, I would change the subject, and I am not even going to mention the lefty views of my 3 sisters, and my 3 brothers who all are conservative like me!  Yep how is that for diversity?

As for this story djermano, it is a great piece.  Though I may not be aware of the new owners background. I am pretty sure many liberals would love to repeal Glass Stengall Act as Liberals for the most part are speculators, they speculate grand ideas with little regard who would pay for them.

Anyhoo, good story, and as for the examiner, I don't read their paper, as I have enough on my plate! As for my total view? I have to agree with ACP,

Thanks for the vote of confidence Barry.   I also had heated exchanges with Peter, but we learned to respect each other;s views.

Barry, i don't really care to read a piece about Soros.  No really.

I made that comment early, to highlight the obvious bias/anger directed against the new owner of the premises.

It would appear that some hold a great deal of anger at real or imagined injustices by a real or imagined person(s).  Because of that real or imagined anger, the article appeared to be written as to cast the supposed perpetrator of whatever real or imagined injustices supposedly occurred, in an extremely unfavorable light.

Give some enough ink, they could make Mother Teresa look bad.

Well at least they gave the Nobel Prize to her...which was a valid recognition...unlike the past shenanagins......in not recognizing Gandhi.....and giving it to tryrants like Henry Kissmyassinger.

The problem is the New Owner Here. We don't like the way he smells, and his past reputation....being part of the illegal invasion in Iraq and supporting Bush........

Isn't that the truth... All I can say is the Republicans wasted and lost a lot of money buying NP....when it clearly looks they did so to ban citizen journalism.... All we will do is create a new one....such as News-Public.com... ..... Republicans aren't too bright are they.?

I am sitting in Asia on my little tropical Island analyzing the take over and have analyzed another such like this one. My view or lets say muttering have been published to day. Its about Citizen Journalism as we knew it and the way it will go if we are not wary of this new trend of politically orientated mainline media, namely at present republican ones.

My view is that Rev is right its the members and writers that have made NP what it is the administration attracted us here with the software of which we by mild moans help to fix the bugs and things, oh some have still in need of tweak or two to solve.

There are more readers and that love to debate on NP in my opinion, I like it here because most of us beg to disagree and respect each other if not opinions. If we accidentally insult we try to put things right because we are friends or at least try to be.

But here goes my opinion for what its worth...

So I thought I might bug out of this fray and change in ownership. I must say that I have felt a warm feeling for so many of you wonderful writers, witty, acerbic, and at times unmerciful in your condemnations on a whole of a variety of issues. Some of which quite frankly affect me personally. Except for a few that have personally taken on the banner of dishonesty and distortion to make a point in tune with their ideology, I respect even my loudest opponents on NP.

Lately it has been quite a lively but at a higher level of debate and comments then in the past. It is especially pleasing when you all agree with my clarity on issues, said with tongue deep into my cheek.

As far as the change in management, I have no real feedback because I have not seen any changes of late except for that annoying header that does nothing for the site but distract.

I really do not mind criticism by anyone but personal attacks have sometimes in the past made my thoughts boil over into responding to them. I have worked hard to let them go and have the belief that others can see through the veil of desperation they provoke.

REV, I can understand your frustration at the new management being everything you ideologically object to but my economic and political leanings allow for a wait and see attitude. I do respect your deep, sincere and suspicious concern for Capitalism but I am not as convinced as you as to its evil intent.

May I suggest that the new and serious changes for government and commerce is the internet and its participatory elements that lead to a more egalitarian representation. I think that the genie is out of the box and the future is in the hands of our children and their children. God help them.

Bob thanks for your comment and great article.... I did read it...and highly recommend it and you... Like I said if you ever get your site going...I will be there..

And Steve thank you for your comment as well... The issue is not the way we writers are still able to operate; it has to do with who bought NP.

The fact is NP gains something from the writers whom contribute and now they are making a profit from it.. I have a problem with that..My problem is with the guy who bought NP. There are other things that are troubling.

1.In 2001 the executive he hired to manage his QWest Corporation was indicted for insider trading with Condoleezza Rice..siting lucrative blackbox Telecommuncations Contracts with the government. Now we know this was before the Iraq And Afghanistan War....So what were they planning? And given the information it is telling prior to 911 happening indicates that Condi knew that 911 was an inside job......this puts Anschutz in the middle of this.

2. He has a huge Entertainment Business. I wonder his mental collusion in thinking News is Entertainment... He may think so..But I don't.....and it is a telling attempt to blurr the two professions by this guy....probably intentional because Entertainment makes violence seem not real, oh that could never happen....or so what;  kind of attitude...because we are conditioned so much with violence on TV as not real....so we make no protests about it....So if they mix up our feelings and perceptions with this and in the real world under the tag of News/Entertainment has Anschutz's Empire is....we do not become traumatized by real wars....and the killing and torture of people.... We think well it's like Entertainment.. I have a big problem with this and the brainwashing they committ everyday in our subliminal surroundings.. They are evil people...Even making the suggestion Government Business is Entertainment, or the War in Israel and Palestine is a form of entertainment... is ludacris.

3. He has/ was the last person to be booking Michael Jackson, and the guy who refused to refund tickets when the Pop Star suddenly died. Why is that? He was also moving forward with a deal in selling Neverland to him, that is taking control of Michael Jackson's home. Why would MJ sell his Neverland? He was not that hard up for money...And then his death? I think he was silenced, maybe he knew stuff about Anschutz that he did not want known, so had him tranquilized and murdered.. I would not put it past these people.

4. He owes the IRS a whopping 143.6 million in back taxes. How is it a Billionare does not pay his taxes? Something really corrupt about this guy.

5. Never did like his ploy to snag David Bechum for his New Galaxy in LA. David was lured just like Michael Jackson because of their talented ability and they wanted to use them for their profits and gain.. Just like they are using Nowpublic. David is from the UK and he should play with his team..instead of tempting him with big money...which is ultimately connected to the Secret Inside US Government CIA crooks.

I do believe that NP has a legal avenue to get out of the deal....and that is NP can not make Big Media Bucks from Anschutz because it violates the trust to the writers. It violates the reason NP came into existence and that was an alternative News source..for citizen journalism. They are using the labor of writers to profit from.....It is Internet Fraud...and a Scam. Contributing so they make money, and making you feel good you can write is against the law and an example of ghost slavery, trickery, snake oil charm tactics.

My advice is to form a Writers and Photography Union.. Not the same as UAW...because we won't ask for dues and Union fees. Only the vote and confidence that writers works are not being used to profit from without compensation....and that does not mean staff makes more and the writers make less. If you don't join the Union you are declared as a Big Media supporter...and you can not post articles or photographs in this Citizen Journalist Site.

I for one Steve think Capitalism is the problem...Just look what it did to the United States. Every other country that was forced to become like the West are not that advanced, but we know where they are headed...in the same crap of debt and misery. The Stock Market is the misery index...all people care about is money...instead of each other.. Billionares are billionares because the money is in their accounts....but if they were rich, they would have no money in their accounts because they used it to help other people.....and those other people do the same to other people and so on... People are lifted up to the wealth of caring about each other....But we have something entirely different in the meaning of Capitalism in the world today...It means acquisition, screw the other guy, do the stock market and figure ways to cheat, or talk people out of their money for the sake of the Military Empire and paying the workers who make the guns and bullets....so we can kill those dame fucking terrorists.

And then that rolls into needing more control of resources, and taking oil, and demeaning other countries...friends one day then enemies the next, because we want their oil for power and prestige and control of the world.. They like the division of us against them...because they are always the bad people...and we don't have to listen to them. It is living in high security buildings and riding in special bomb proof cars, and having people watch you all day....gives a rush to the adrenaline veins that hey you are the man....Yeah the man who has caused so much trouble....that people plot to kill you.

It is a terrible thing what the Capitalist is doing...and their method is wrong. There are more bankruptcies, more debt, more swindling than the hairs on your body...And we get what? Terrorism. The more you make the more you become a target of terror.  Because we have not worked out the idea that we did it wrong.

People should not hoard money in the bank, or worry they will be ripped off. It should be a society where we help one another. Billionares are not billionares when so many bad things are all around them..It means they have failed to do with the money God put in their interest to use.. God will Shut down the Stock Market someday...because people have figured it just does not work.. It is senseless ramblings on each day....of meaningless charts and numbers that go up and down....with a significance of daily indifference..because someone always loses... and someone always wins.... The winners never do the right thing with the money..they collude with other rich people to make sure they don't lose a dime....to some real person without a job, or no food for their kids, living under a bridge... or living under bush like some damn groundhog.

Yep.....It is a selfish game called Capitalism....and philanthropist are only there in disguise...that being they lied to gain their wealth in order to say they are nice guys in giving it back.....is a hell of way to exist....No Capitalism is not a means to an end...it is an end to its means. and now we know why Jesus Christ the son of God was born in a cave, as a poor person.....such it is....I believe not in capitalism and the lie of wealth....... So I say you Capitalist fuckers stop forcing us, killing us, occupying us, and brainwashing us, and intimidating us to accept your ways to nowhere...because you can not give us real life.

God Bless The New York Yankees. and you too Steve and Bob.

The Rev.

i was also banned for reporting on tippett's greed and anschutz' american fascho bravado. all 3 CJists i created were banned. i was also banned as an other presenting character for reporting from gaza on the IDF war crimes. no reason given, other than the termination of freedom of newsmaking by nowpublic then and not - notpublic.this site infringes on the grassroots of trust and belief that readers can balance their news better from the fresh believability of citizen journalists. instead nowpublic subverts that believability by its banning practice and its business practice and does citizen journalism a great disservice.how much was that you stole tippett, per word, per writer? and for what -SLAP in our face!
