NowPublic has had an amazing year, and it's all thanks to our great members, who have posted everything from breaking, important news or the latest nude scandal.

Since 2008 is almost over, we thought we'd go over some of NowPublic's most popular stories. In this case we're using the amount of views a story received (removing some random 'bikini' stories that don't really count).

#7 Beijing Opening Ceremonies: 10,581 views.

The Beijing Olympics were watched critically by people the world over, and their opening ceremony was no exception. A number of snafus and observations swept over the net, nicely summed up by Milieunet:

Update 18-08:  And again there is some news about faking during the Opening Ceremony. Do you remember those 56 children representing China's 56 ethnic groups? Fake again.

#6 Fire Knocks Out Power in Vancouver: 24,021 views

A small, local incident that shut down much of the business section of downtown Vancouver, Canada, was first reported by our very own NowPublic co-founder Mike Tippett:

About 1,500 customers are still without power, down from 4,500 this afternoon at the peak of the blackout. Police are still encouraging motorists to avoid the downtown area.

#5 United States National Debt vs. Canadian: 57,413 views.

A very interesting observation and bit of math by NP'er Bender_420 shows that Canadians owe around $21,055 compared to $27,484 in the US:

So, with the current USA population at about 295,734,134, a quick division tells me this works out to $27,484 USD for every man, woman, and child in the United States. Of course, by the time you read this it'll probably be over $27,500 per capita...

#4 Sarah Palin's "Fake" Nude Pic: 62,483 views.

A story about fake nude pics of then vice-presidential wannabe Sarah Palin blew up online, sending thousands of political - er - researchers scouring google. Staffer Sanjay Jha brought us that one:

Now apparently a snap of her nude pics has surfaced on the internet and it has raised a frenzy on the cyberspace.

#3 Fake 'Boy Uses Credit Card for Hookers' Story: 80,091 views.

We've all seen headlines like this before: "Teenage boy steals father's credit card to buy hookers" - except we hadn't, and many sites reported it as being true. It ended up being a fake, viral story that was quickly debunked. JD Rucker told us what's up:

#2 Tim Russert's Funeral Information: 119,404 views.

When NBC anchor Tim Russert died in June, thousands of fans and well-wishers were searching for information on his funeral. NP member Politisite posted the details in mid-june:

According to an unidentified source inside the NBC newsroom in DC.  Tim Russert's funeral is going to be the closed to the Public

#1 Cannabis Issues Dominate Obama's "Question" site: 200,182

NowPublic member Brinna posted a great story that summed up the most popular questions asked on President-elect Barack Obama's "Open for Questions" website, the foremost of which was issues relating to Cannabis legality:

In the short twenty four hours the “Open for Questions” segment of Obama’s change.gov website actually stayed open, 7300 questions were posted, 10,000 people participated and 600,000 votes were cast for the most important issues on people’s minds. Guess which question had the most votes?
