Collider halted until next year
By Paul Rincon
Science reporter, BBC News

LHC dipole magnets (Cern/M. Brice) The incident was probably caused by a faulty connection between magnets

The Large Hadron Collider near Geneva will be shut off until spring 2009 while engineers probe a magnet failure.

The incident on 19 September caused a tonne of liquid helium to leak out into the experiment's 27km-long tunnel.

Officials said the time required to fully investigate the problem precluded a re-start before the lab's winter maintenance period.

The collider is built to smash protons together at huge speeds, recreating conditions moments after the Big Bang.

Scientists hope it will shed light on fundamental questions in physics.

"Coming immediately after the very successful start of LHC operation on 10 September, this is undoubtedly a psychological blow," said Robert Aymar, director-general of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (Cern), in a statement.

But he praised the skill and preparation of the teams involved in building the particle accelerator.

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. It's good stuff.

I heard this morning that it's going to take almost a month too cool down enough for scientists to make repairs. Can that be right?

Thanks Jarrett, for Flag "LHC collider down, BBC", this time NowPublic was inside the scene, earlier then BBC, click above Link "Frank and the magic machine" Frank has built the collider is the machine engineer. Yes It takes one month to warm up (from helium cooled -273°C°) you could not touch any contact, after Repair one month to cool down = Total 2 months. April 2009 next activities LHC.

Sorry our frontpage editors slept this night, missed their chance, Part II of the Live Interview was not one time on the Rolling bar, nor title story (I announced it day before with pre-interview to draw attention for NP, part one worked, part II ignored, why is daily junk preferred by editors with 80 views , no world view of editors, sorry.. So I can not afford to repeat To give quality worldclass articles to NP, I am sorry, I have other outlets. BBC was quickly reacting with British PR  CERN Mgr. James Gillies to confirm my view with Frank, the problem at the magnets,  probably the connectors set fire at high currency, not be fastened 100%. The interview was a complete risk to bring on NP, I agree. But thats the hard way to improve for quality Readers. Copy writing,  preferred for a moment of bizarre attention is not world reader level .

Thanks to the many encouraging comments  and thanks to myself,  that I put in Europe the articles up and check it untill 3 clock in the morning before they disappear under Canada time schedule, frustrating.

Jarrett you saved my day, at least one intelligent person out there from the editors, who got  the picture. Have a nice day, I am on my way to the Monaco yacht show. P.S the quality economy reports from the founder of this newspaper find also no frontpage attention by the editors, should look behind the scene, read 2 months later, you see the quality ahead of time. that's journalism ahead of BBC, CNN classics.
