NYC Pride Parade 2009: Photos and Video
Thousands of New Yorkers took to the streets to celebrate the Gay Pride Parade.
This year’s parade had more of a political edge as topics such as gay marriage were at the fore. This year's political tone may have something to do with the fact that the parade took place on the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, an event that is widely considered to be the birth of the Gay Rights movement.
Flavia Rando marched with the Gay Liberation Front, which began in 1969 after the Stonewall uprising.
"It feels like we changed the world," Rando said. "We started a global movement."
There was still plenty of frivolity to be had. This year's march featured floats filled with dancers, drag queens, and disco music. A Liza Minnelli impersenator lip-synched "New York, New York" as he/she rode atop the Stonewall Inn float.
