Updated: During its meeting today, OAS decided to create a high level commission to meet European Members of Parliament and discuss the rule of return policy.

Caracas, Venezuela, 26 June 2008. Today and upon a Peruvian  request, the Organization of American States (OAS) held a meeting to analyse the regional effects of a recent EU policy on immigration. This new policy called- rule of return -was approved on 17 June 2008 and would affect Latin American immigrants severely. It would put in custody illegal immigrants and affect their children. Thus, various regional governments - notably Bolivia Ecuador, and Venezuela - condemned the EU directives. Criticism has been made over the Human Rights violations this new EU policy would promote. Historical links with Europe have also been cited to criticise the immigration policy.

In a previous statement, OAS General Secretary Jose Miguel Insulza expressed that "Once again in the developed world a repressive measure against illegal immigrants is approved, which directly affects many Latin Americas”.
