Amazing Obama commmercial on McCain's Economic Experience

Barack Obama aired a 30 minute prime time commercial ad on 7 major television networks tonight to discuss his presidential campaign.  The infomercial speech preceded the Major League Baseball World Series game, which was delayed slightly in order to accomodate the Senator's TV ad campaign.  The ad aired on Fox, CBS, NBC, Univision, BET, MSNBC and TV One.

33.6 million people tuned in to watch Obama's address, according to Nielsen ratings.

Watch the full video of the event, or see the attached NowPublic.com media on the left for Obama's commercial and the McCain 30 second response ad, which also aired nationally tonight.

Time-Stamped LIVE blogging and updates below - also see our Scan page for ongoing live updates and the US Election channel for additional information.

What did you think was the most in/effective portion of the commercial?  Was it successful?  Leave a comment below with your thoughts.

8:06 PM

Governors endorsing Obama, we meet real Americans who are struggling.  Nice production value so far.

8:10 PM

America needs energy independence.

8:13 PM

Americans are tightening their belts, and Washington should be leading the way.  Cutbacks are needed, Iraq funding should be first to go - this money could to go schools, hospitals, scholarships - back into America.

8:16 PM

Obama talks about his father, was shaped more by his absence than his presence.

All children need world class education, they need our support and higher standards.  We can create schools that work.

8:19 PM

In last months of Barack's mother's life, she was filling out insurance forms and struggling with medical bills.  He knows what it's like.

8:20 PM

"No Liberal America, No Conservative America, just the United States of America."

8:22 PM

More endorsements from other politicians, Biden speaks in support of Obama.  Obama speaks on how they can relate to one another, they share core values and sense of where country needs to go.

8:23 PM

We meet another working class family, look at a bit of history and meet Mark Dow who are plant workers and struggling to make ends meet.  People used to have security in jobs, receive retirement funding; now there are layoffs and no security.

8:24 PM

Communities need to pull together; the livelihood of many depend on a single plant, which if shut down would have devastating effects.

8:25 PM

Barack vows to renew military and protect country at all costs.  Refocus attention on key battles, but recognizes that the soldiers being sent over are sons and daughters.  Obama understands the stakes, has the courage to be rational.

8:26 PM

Everyone has a story, Americans are hard workers and do so to create better lives for their children - this is the story of America.

8:27 PM

Vows to be honest about challenges, will listen throughout disagreements, will open the doors of government and ask Americans to be involved in their own democracy again.  Now Obama is speaking live in Florida now.

8:28 PM

Healthcare, renewable energy, education key points.  Come together as one nation, one people.  Fight for small business owners, hard working couples, young students.

8:29 PM

People should have the right to achieve their American dream.  Invites people to knock on doors, make phone calls, vote, stand in solidarity with Obama.  Together we will change the country, and change the world.

---

The senator from Illinois this month arranged to buy tonight's 8 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. slot on CBS, NBC and Spanish-language network Univision. Fox Broadcasting joined the field after Major League Baseball agreed to delay the start time of tonight's World Series game.

Walt Disney Co.-owned ABC, however, initially balked at selling its 8 p.m. slot, saying it didn't want to bump its regularly scheduled series, "Pushing Daisies," even though the whimsical show has been struggling in the ratings.

ABC executives said the earlier decision not to accept the Obama infomercial was due to the problem of filling the second half-hour of the 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. time period -- and not for political reasons.

The Obama campaign previously released a short clip of the 30 minute commercial:

“We’ve been talking about the same problems for decades and nothing is ever done to solve them. For the past 20 months, I’ve traveled the length of this country, and Michelle and I have met so many Americans who are looking for real and lasting change that makes a difference in their lives,” Obama says in the commercial, according to the Times.

Many Democrats and Republicans are hailing Obama's extended TV commercial as a stragetic move, though not everyone is on the bandwagon and some consider the infomercial to be "overkill."

Several political image makers, both Republicans and Democrats, say it’s a smart move. But is there a risk of excess in it, as well?

While Obama hasn’t made many strategic mistakes in his campaign against Republican John McCain, he has, on occasion, shown a weakness for extravagance.

The prime-time 8 p.m. television spot reportedly cost between $3 and $5 million total to air - on top of the $3 million in production costs.  The Obama camp justifies the infomercial as necessary and not extravagant, especially as the McCain campaign ramps up their offensive attacks against Obama.

Titled "TV Special," the McCain infomercial ad is transcribed as follows:

Using clips of Obama and his massive campaign crowds, the voice-over states, “Behind the fancy speeches, grand promises and TV special, lies the truth: With crises at home and abroad, Barack Obama lacks the experience America needs. And it shows. His response to our economic crisis is to spend and tax our economy deeper into recession. The fact is Barack Obama’s not ready yet.”

One McCain aide mocked the efficiacy of TV infomercials in swaying US voters in a press conference this morning, yet despite this the Republican party will air a 30-second national ad campaign of their own tonight.

Obama has just made the half-hour pre-election infomercial - and jockeying for the best time slot - mandatory for all future elections.

I don't think that anyone can disagree that the issues mentioned in this video touch each and every american.  The major difference that seperates everyone is who we believe can fix these problems.

What people don't seem to understand is that it was Clinton who de-regulated the housing loan system.  McCain fought to put these regulations back into place.  The democrats rejected the claims that a crisis was coming.  Boom... here we are in the middle of a crisis caused by the failure fannie mae and freddie mac.  Unfortunately no one follows what goes on in congress so its easier to be swayed by catchy phrases and campaign marketing strategies.

I saw a comment above stating they wondered if McCain would a similar ad.  McCain's campaign cannot afford to do these ad's because McCain is a man of his word and had agreed to take public financing.  Obama made the same promise but broke his promise to the american people because winnning was more important than his word.

0
kiphime

He did not promise that he would stick to public funds.  McCain stated that. Get your facts straight.  Obama used whatever choices he  had to his benefit.  He knew the logistics of this campaign.

To say he broke a promise is an out right lie and a great deal of people take offense in that type of judgement.  And as far as winning is concerned, it better be important because he wants to get this great nation back to the respectable point it was at 8 years ago.  We are the laughing stock of the world and that need to change and Obama will help us get there.  Please get your facts straight before you post such a stupid comment again.  Thank you.

I will definitely vote for Obama, cause DAMN I want my welfare check every year for the next eight!.  Yes, I vote because he makes me cry.  I base all my voting decisions on how they make me feel.  I want the government to take care of me because it feels good.  I want to jump off a cliff because the air on my face feels good.  Did Obama say anything in his speech about the LA terrorist dinner?  Did he mention his tax plan keeps waivering up and down?  Did he tell anybody that half his tax cut is welfare checks to those who don't pay taxes?  Of course not, because burying the truth is his best quality.

You should try to get your WELFARE right now while they're handing it out like crazy to BIG BUSINESS!  There may not be any more money left to even borrow by January.  Go ahead and try to get yours now.  Just tell them about your failed business venture!

Terri Potratz, I like this story. It's good stuff. I only saw the "live" portion of it from Florida, which started right before the start of the "resumed" World Series game. Obama was fine, and good for him for being with Joe Biden on the podium at the end.  I hope they win on Tuesday, Nov. 4!

me and my husband are high skilled legal immigrants to this country but we r nt citizens yet.....i looked at my husband while watching the speach he was crying.. he looked at me i was crying too.. we could relate to his handwork as a child to reach this far..i wish american ppl recognize the HOPE he provide and vote for him..or else people around the world will laugh at american stupidity to elect maccain after 8 yrs of bush..America is the Last HOPE for this world..I love this country more than  my life...[:)]..i will b ever greatful to the oportunities this country gave us...

0
Edmund Jenks

Sadly, the HOPE these people feel about the kind of American opportunity they came here for will be dashed. The economic plan and change in direction toward classism will only limit how far these enthusiastic and educated immigrants will be allowed to actually grow.

I love the fact that this half-hour scripted presentation was shown. It stands as a testimate to the honesty of candidate Barack Obama. Candidate Obama had pledged to have the public finance his campaign as did John McCain. John McCain was TRUE to his word ... and Barack Obama was not.

If he would break his word ... or lie ... about this, what else would his word or commitment not be good for?

I also loved to hear Obama state that the government needs to tighten its belt - FUNNY THAT! Then why has he focused on universal healthcare, and the expansion of Social Security at a time it is becoming insolvent with a "95% of all taxpayers will get a tax cut" when only 60% of taxpayers actually pay taxes (Transfer Payment that equals Welfare)? Another concept of a broken word?

If Barack Obama becomes the executive branch in a ONE PARTY government system (no checks, no balances) ... these immigrants will have come here to America only to find a kind of govenment that is becoming like the one they just fled from!

0
kiphime

OMG, were you listening to the same program everyone else was listening to because you are in LA LA land.  Get a grip.  Where is the proof the he EVER promised to stick to public funds.  Is it true because McCain said so?  NOOOOOOT!  When you get your foot out of your mouth, go to stopthesmears.com and re-evaluate your life because right now it sucks.

0
Edmund Jenks

So you advise me to go to a Barack Obama website to get the facts about Barack Obama when I have been watching the election from both sides the whole time - NICE!

This will be a little like the government we will have when the Democrat Party will have control over all branches of government ... to get the truth, all we need to do is ask who is in power without the customary (and messy) "Checks & Balances".

But Hey, at least we have a free and unregulated press to watch after our collective interests - OUCH.

0
midwest_mom
65% of taxpayers pay taxes
Perhaps you mean 65% of citizens pay taxes?  And of those 65% who do pay, if 95% of them received a tax cut, that would mean over 60% of citizens receive a tax cut.

Barack Obama has purchased a half-hour of primetime television on CBS and NBC, sources confirm. Obama's theme is not just change but unity, so he's appealing to the whole nation rather than a handful of tossup states. CBS and NBC spokespersons declined comment. Sources say the Obama camp also talked to Fox, but the network might not be able to accommodate the campaign as the time period might conflict with a potential Game 6 of the World Series.

PLEASE investigate what happened to the economy in the Jimmy Carter years!

Study the same failed policies that caused 18% inflation that Obama wants to implement!

Can you see the massive price increases, job losses and financial pain that EVERYONE

will experience under Obama?   Please do your homework!  We already had Obama

as president- Jimmy Carter- and he caused massive financial pain to all

Americans.  Carter was booted out of office after 4 years of screwing everyone but

welfare trolls.  Do your homework!

Terri Potratz, I like this story. It's good stuff.

He admits he will not be a perfect President...Healthy to say...perhaps he will bring us closer to fixing our troubles. He said nothing about solving the energy problems for the world...He only focuses on the USA...He is still much of the same ole...stick in the mud...

He has no grasp of what he will do to make the new economy. I hope he see's this..America needs to be engaged in the World....helping other countries to get jobs as well. If not we will always hear the War cries from the other party. America is very much an isolationist country..and simply to provide for Americans and not give the same to other people in the world is quite selfish and detrimental. He needs to open his lens view or make a bigger one...to see that our problems stem from lack of energy independence. When we are engaged to bring energy and to reduce the military not rebuild it....we become stronger and the world accepts our leadership. I voted for Obama and this I will keep harping at him...so he can become a more than perfect President.......not only for the US but as a light to all nations on earth. Please see my message''''

Excellent with a positive message and solutions. I came away thinking at least he understands what is happening to ordinary Americans. Palin's 'let them eat cake' wardrobe moment should serve as a wake up call for the rest of us. Imagine the middle class republicans contributing  to the McCain/Palin campaign in good faith only to have those contributions squandered on Gov. Palin. McCain is part of the plutocracy that is destroying the middle class.
To sum up: Obama's correct, Yes, We Can. Americans can do what needs to be done, restore our standing in the world and once again be  innovative people creating solutions to the world's challenges. The Economist did a world wide  poll  on Obama or McCain.  The results  are  Obama  would earn 9000+ world electoral votes to McCain's paltry few hundred. The world too, knows we can if we can make the right choice, Obama, on Tuesday.

Now that the INTELLIGENT folks know the truth behind "Palin's wardrobe" we see how asinine it was for people to crack her for it. Simply stupid ... as all the other crap thrown at this classy lady.

Palin didn't keep the wardrobe. It went BACK TO the GOP. It was never her's to keep, just more television prop. I met Gov. Palin while working out and I have to say she is one smart woman who really loves her country. Shame all you knot-heads.

Obama Worked with Terrorist [ref. Rashid Khalidi]
Senator helped fund organization that rejects 'racist' Israel's existenceby Aaron Klein
WorldNetDaily
February 24, 2008
http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=57231

JERUSALEM – The board of a nonprofit organization on which Sen. Barack Obama served as a paid director alongside a confessed domestic terrorist granted funding to a controversial Arab group that mourns the establishment of Israel as a "catastrophe" and supports intense immigration reform, including providing drivers licenses and education to illegal aliens.

The co-founder of the Arab group in question, Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi, also has held a fundraiser for Obama. Khalidi is a harsh critic of Israel, has made statements supportive of Palestinian terror and reportedly has worked on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Organization while it was involved in anti-Western terrorism and was labeled by the State Department as a terror group.

In 2001, the Woods Fund, a Chicago-based nonprofit that describes itself as a group helping the disadvantaged, provided a $40,000 grant to the Arab American Action Network, or AAAN, for which Khalidi's wife, Mona, serves as president. The Fund provided a second grant to the AAAN for $35,000 in 2002.

Obama was a director of the Woods Fund board from 1999 to Dec. 11, 2002, according to the Fund's website. According to tax filings, Obama received compensation of $6,000 per year for his service in 1999 and 2001.

Obama served on the Wood's Fund board alongside William C. Ayers, a member of the Weathermen terrorist group which sought to overthrow of the U.S. government and took responsibility for bombing the U.S. Capitol in 1971.

Ayers, who still serves on the Woods Fund board, contributed $200 to Obama's senatorial campaign fund and has served on panels with Obama at numerous public speaking engagements. Ayers admitted to involvement in the bombings of U.S. governmental buildings in the 1970s. He is a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The $40,000 grant from Obama's Woods Fund to the AAAN constituted about a fifth of the Arab group's reported grants for 2001, according to tax filings obtained by WND. The $35,000 Woods Fund grant in 2002 also constituted about one-fifth of AAAN's reported grants for that year.

The AAAN, headquartered in the heart of Chicago's Palestinian immigrant community, describes itself as working to "empower Chicago-area Arab immigrants and Arab Americans through the combined strategies of community organizing, advocacy, education and social services, leadership development, and forging productive relationships with other communities."

It reportedly has worked on projects with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, which supports open boarders and education for illegal aliens.

The AAAN in 2005 sent a letter to New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson in which it called a billboard opposing a North Carolina-New Mexico joint initiative to deny driver's licenses to illegal aliens a "bigoted attack on Arabs and Muslims."

Speakers at AAAN dinners and events routinely have taken an anti-Israel line.

The group co-sponsored a Palestinian art exhibit, titled, "The Subject of Palestine," that featured works related to what some Palestinians call the "Nakba" or "catastrophe" of Israel's founding in 1948.

According to the widely discredited Nakba narrative, Jews in 1948 forcibly expelled hundreds of thousands - some Palestinians claim over one million - Arabs from their homes and then took over the territory.

Historically, about 600,000 Arabs fled Israel after surrounding Arab countries warned they would destroy the Jewish state in 1948. Some Arabs also were driven out by Jewish forces while they were trying to push back invading Arab armies. At the same time, over 800,000 Jews were expelled or left Arab countries under threat after Israel was founded.

The theme of AAAN's Nakba art exhibit, held at DePaul University in 2005, was "the compelling and continuing tragedy of Palestinian life ... under [Israeli] occupation ... home demolition ... statelessness ... bereavement ... martyrdom, and ... the heroic struggle for life, for safety, and for freedom."

Another AAAN initiative, titled, "Al Nakba 1948 as experienced by Chicago Palestinians," seeks documents related to the "catastrophe" of Israel's founding.

A post on the AAAN site asked users: "Do you have photos, letters or other memories you could share about Al-Nakba-1948?"

That posting was recently removed. The AAAN website currently states the entire site is under construction.

Pro-PLO advocate held Obama fundraiser, describes Obama as 'sympathetic'

AAAN co-founder Rashid Khalidi was reportedly a director of the official PLO press agency WAFA in Beirut from 1976 to 1982, while the PLO committed scores of anti-Western attacks and was labeled by the U.S. as a terror group. Khalidi's wife, AAAN President Mona Khalidi, was reportedly WAFA's English translator during that period.

Rashid Khalidi at times has denied working directly for the PLO but Palestinian diplomatic sources in Ramallah told WND he indeed directed WAFA. Khalidi also advised the Palestinian delegation to the Madrid Conference in 1991.

During documented speeches and public events, Khalidi has called Israel an "apartheid system in creation" and a destructive "racist" state.

He has multiple times expressed support for Palestinian terror, calling suicide bombings response to "Israeli aggression." He dedicated his 1986 book, "Under Siege," to "those who gave their lives ... in defense of the cause of Palestine and independence of Lebanon." Critics assailed the book as excusing Palestinian terrorism.

While the Woods Fund's contribution to Khalidi's AAAN might be perceived as a one-time run in with Obama, the presidential hopeful and Khalidi evidence a deeper relationship.

According to a professor at the University of Chicago who said he has known Obama for 12 years, the Democratic presidential hopeful first befriended Khalidi when the two worked together at the university. The professor spoke on condition of anonymity. Khalidi lectured at the University of Chicago until 2003 while Obama taught law there from 1993 until his election to the Senate in 2004.

Khalidi in 2000 held what was described as a successful fundraiser for Obama's failed bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, a fact not denied by Khalidi.

Speaking in a joint interview with WND and the John Batchelor Show of New York's WABC Radio and Los Angeles' KFI Radio, Khalidi was asked about his 2000 fundraiser for Obama.

"I was just doing my duties as a Chicago resident to help my local politician," Khalidi stated.

Khalidi said he supports Obama for president "because he is the only candidate who has expressed sympathy for the Palestinian cause."

Khalidi also lauded Obama for "saying he supports talks with Iran. If the U.S. can talk with the Soviet Union during the Cold War, there is no reason it can't talk with the Iranians."

Asked about Obama's role funding the AAAN, Khalidi claimed he had "never heard of the Woods Fund until it popped up on a bunch of blogs a few months ago."

He terminated the call when petitioned further about his links with Obama.

Contacted by phone, Mona Khalidi refused to answer WND's questions about the AAAN's involvement with Obama.

Obama's campaign headquarters did not reply to a list of WND questions sent by e-mail to the senator's press office.

Obama, American terrorist in same circles

Obama served on the board with Ayers, who was a Weathermen leader and has written about his involvement with the group's bombings of the New York City Police headquarters in 1970, the Capitol in 1971 and the Pentagon in 1972.

"I don't regret setting bombs. I feel we didn't do enough," Ayers told the New York Times in an interview released on Sept. 11, 2001

"Everything was absolutely ideal on the day I bombed the Pentagon," Ayers wrote in his memoirs, titled "Fugitive Days." He continued with a disclaimer that he didn't personally set the bombs, but his group set the explosives and planned the attack.

A $200 campaign contribution is listed on April 2, 2001 by the "Friends of Barack Obama" campaign fund. The two taught appeared speaking together at several public events, including a 1997 University of Chicago panel entitled, "Should a child ever be called a 'super predator?'" and another panel for the University of Illinois in April 2002, entitled, "Intellectuals: Who Needs Them?"

The charges against Ayers were dropped in 1974 because of prosecutorial misconduct, including illegal surveillance.

Ayers is married to another notorious Weathermen terrorist, Bernadine Dohrn, who has also served on panels with Obama. Dohrn was once on the FBI's Top 10 Most Wanted List and was described by J. Edgar Hoover as the "most dangerous woman in America." Ayers and Dohrn raised the son of Weathermen terrorist Kathy Boudin, who was serving a sentence for participating in a 1981 murder and robbery that left 4 people dead.

Obama advisor wants talks with terrorists

The revelations about Obama's relationship with Khalidi follows a recent WND article quoting Israeli security officials who expressed "concern" about Robert Malley, an adviser to Obama who has advocated negotiations with Hamas and providing international assistance to the terrorist group.

Malley, a principal Obama foreign policy adviser, has penned numerous opinion articles, many of them co-written with a former adviser to the late Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat, petitioning for dialogue with Hamas and blasting Israel for numerous policies he says harm the Palestinian cause.

Malley also previously penned a well-circulated New York Review of Books piece largely blaming Israel for the collapse of the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations at Camp David in 2000 when Arafat turned down a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and eastern sections of Jerusalem and instead returned to the Middle East to launch an intifada, or terrorist campaign, against the Jewish state.

Malley's contentions have been strongly refuted by key participants at Camp David, including President Bill Clinton, then-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and primary U.S. envoy to the Middle East Dennis Ross, all of whom squarely blamed Arafat's refusal to make peace for the talks' failure.
