President Barack Obamac made his first viswit to Africa to the west African nation of Ghana which just held a fair and democratic election. Mr. Obama, the first black US president ia popular in Africa, with the national leaders and the people. Obama’s father was born in the east African nation of Kenya. Obama wanted his first visit to Africa to be all business so he choose Ghana over Kenya so there would not be the distractions of meeting his Kenyan relatives.  Also Ghana has a stronger democratic record than does Kenya.

On this trip Obama used some strong language on the need for good leaders.  He said Africa does not need strongmen. He called for more open government, an end to corruption and paying of bribes to get a job or to get documents approved  He said all people want to live in a free society where the rule of law is respected, with a strong democracy, an end to tyranny and brutality, a nation with strong civil instutions. Obama condemned military coups, thje drug trade, and corrupt police officers politicians

Obama’s message seemed to be that after 40 or 50 years of independence it is time for African people and natioins to take responsibility for the faults existing in their nations, stop blaming outsiders or past colonialism, and move forward united in democratic government and institutions to resolve the problems.

Over all president Obama’s Africa trip was a success, with god public receptions, large crowds, and mostly positive reviews from African leaders and the press worldwide. He will likely make a more extended trip to Africa next year, visiting some of the larger nations.
