Obama-Biden's Whistle-Stop Train Tour to Washington D.C.
Today, Jan.17, President-elect Obama, Vice President-elect Biden and their families are traveling by train to the Inauguration, holding events in Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore before arriving in Washington, D.C. The journey is modeled after President Abraham Lincoln's trip in 1861.
41 people from across the country whose life experiences reflect the rich diversity of America are joining the Obamas and Bidens on this historical train trip.
A brief exerpt of the President-elect Obama's speech in Philadelphia provided by PIC
"We are here today not simply to pay tribute to our first patriots but to take up the work that they began. The trials we face are very different now, but severe in their own right. Only a handful of times in our history has a generation been confronted with challenges so vast. An economy that is faltering. Two wars, one that needs to be ended responsibly, one that needs to be waged wisely. A planet that is warming from our unsustainable dependence on oil.
And yet while our problems may be new, what is required to overcome them is not. What is required is the same perseverance and idealism that our founders displayed. What is required is a new declaration of independence, not just in our nation, but in our own lives - from ideology and small thinking, prejudice and bigotry - an appeal not to our easy instincts but to our better angels."
In addition to those stops as mentioned in previous NP article and recently updated, the train will also “slow roll” through Claymont, Delaware, and Edgewood, Maryland, so that more Americans will have the opportunity to witness the President-elect and Vice President-elect make their way to Washington, D.C.
At the events in Wilmington and Baltimore, canned food drives will take place as part of President-elect Obama and Vice President-elect Biden’s national service initiatives. PIC is asking those attending the Wilmington event to bring along a can of food, which will be delivered to a local food bank. In Baltimore, event attendees are asked to contribute canned goods at Camden Yards, in a receptacle at the corner of Baltimore Street and Calvert Street.
