Obama Bows To Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio: What Is With All The Bowing?
President Obama visited Tampa, Florida last week to announce $8 billion in federal stimulus for high-speed rail lines, with $1.25 million cut out specifically for Florida. But, the announcement of the new whopping stimulus package was not the only news that attracted public attention in Tampa. Instead, people were perplexed as to why Obama bowed to Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio.
Cameras captured U.S. President bowing before Iorio as he was shaking her hand upon their meeting at MacDill Air Force Base on January 28. But, it is not the first incident when President Obama was caught bowing when greeting someone. During his visit to Japan in November, President Obama made a deep bow before Japanese Emperor Akihito. But, bowing when greeting people is customary in Japan, so the incident did not get as much hype as one from five months earlier.
In April, President Obama appeared to have bowed before King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia during the G20 summit in London. The incident sparked a considerable amount of controversy. At one point, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was pressed to explain President Obama's bow, saying it happened solely because of the height difference between U.S. President and King Abdullah. No doubt Press Secretary Gibbs will have a hard time trying to explain the bow to Tampa Mayor: Iorio and Obama are about the same height.
