President-elect Barack Obama hasn't even been sworn in as US President yet and he is already talking about breaking a key campaign promises to raise taxes for the wealthiest Americans.  During his election campaign Obama vowed to repeal a Bush tax break given to the wealthy minority.  He is now saying that job protection and tax breaks for the middle and working class will have to come first.  Broken promise or smart economic planning? You decide.

Over the weekend, Obama said he has charged his new economic team with devising a plan that would create or preserve 2.5 million jobs over two years. He said the plan would include broad spending plans as well as the middle- and low-income tax cuts he described during the campaign.

Aides later said the plan would not include any of the tax increases Obama, as a candidate, had said he would impose on taxpayers who make more than $250,000.

Asked Monday when those hikes might go into effect, Obama said, "Whether that's done through repeal, or whether that's done because the Bush tax cuts are not renewed, is something that my economic team will be providing me a recommendation on."

If repealed early, Obama's tax increase on the rich would have generated significant revenue, but not enough to compensate for the cost of his tax cuts. An analysis by the Tax Policy Center, based on January 2008 income projections, estimated that the increases would result in about $43 billion in revenue in 2009 and $45 billion in 2010. Those numbers would be smaller now, as the economy has lowered expected incomes.

Obama's economic advisers say he will not propose any tax increases in the economic plan he unveils in January. It is to be focused entirely on job creation and economic recovery.

What I think has happened here is that PE Obama has been briefed by the Bush Admin and found that his campaign promises should be put on hold.  He has also picked Moderate Right economic Advisors and is Keeping the Defense Secretary Gates.  This is not the Change folks wanted but maybe he has found that there is quite a difference between a campaign and what really works.  I have seen this in every US election since 1976.  I am not complaining, but I am a conservative.  I see the left is livid.  The right is keeping its mouth shut.  So far he gets high marks from the right

You people Crack me up.

There is no way that PE Obama or any other PE can uphold 90% of their campaign promises. You guys however are ALREADY making excuses for your own stupidity!!

You've missed some of the facts behind the story. Bush's tax cut is already set to expire in 2011. Obama always promised not to renew the tax cut. He never gave a date as to when he would eliminate the Bush tax, only saying that it would be removed. He also promised to reduce the tax burden on the other 95% of Americans, which is exactly what he plans to do.

As an American, I could care less when that tax cut goes away as long as there is job creation and an effective economic stimulus package. What the economy really needs is more people making more money and buying more things. The entire policy does not depend on that one tax cut to pay for the bulk of it.

I really dislike this kind of sensationalistic reporting. Try looking at the big picture next time.

it's basic economics 101 that you cannot raise taxes during a recession... it causes an increase in unemployment. Obama won the election by selling lies.  John Mccain told the truth and unfortunately many people didnt' want to hear it.

Obama is also filling the white house with the same old people that have been around forever... the very thing he said Mccain would do.  The only change you are going to see is the change you are left with in your pocket.

"it's basic economics 101" is a Republican tag line with no merit in the real world. You CAN raise taxes anytime you wish is the reality. You cannot get out of a recession/depression without increasing revenue and/ or lowering spending, that is basic economics

McCain told the truth? - You either didn't follow the campaigns or are ignorant of the facts, or both. Read factcheck.org or politifact.com and see who told the truth.

I think that conclusion is a little fast. But for sure he can not made all promises come true.
