President Obama and  Robert Gates are trying to redeem themselves by supporting the closure of Guantanemo.. President Obama during his campaign said he would close Guantanemo, and then release torture pics and memo's, but reneged on his promise...is now changing his mind again. When he said change, did it mean change for the American people, or his right to change his mind constantly.

Now Gates is too by supporing the closure of Guantanemo. He has done some pretty sneaky stuff like when he advised Ronald Reagan to sell Weapons to Iran so they could use profits to sell weapons to the Contra's.. He knew very well that would betray Saddam....after all the weapons he and the Reagan Administration sold him to fight Iran... This was one of the main reasons Saddam tried to reclaim Kuwait prompting the first War with Iraq...Operation Desert Storm....putting at risk Israel's security.

Maybe Gates is seeing the light.. Now if he would support the indictments and prosecution of Cheney and Bush...for their war crimes.....that killed over a million innocent peoples. lives...I think he has a chance for redemption....while becoming a true American who admits mistakes..and goes after to correct them...

I say there is a glimmer of hope for Robert Gates.....

Also President Obama has come out in support of tightening defense procurement... Not that it has anything to do with the current 5% increase to the military budget over Bush's watch... But at least he is acknowledging that the Military can be over bloated...as John McCain mentioned his abilities in stopping wasteful military spending during the Presidential debates.

This is a good gesture PresidentObama...but far from the real promises he made during his campaign. All I know is a guy who makes promises to get a job, and does not do them when the people elect him to do them.....he merely brings more discreditably to not only the USA but to Democracy itself..  But it is but another twinkle of hope...

Clearly said atrocites by the Taliban have not been proved. And if they were true are probably indicative to the fact of not having people tell them where their camps are.

These said atrocites never happened before or were documented before the invasion of Afghanistan. It has only materialized after the US lies about 911, and the invasion of Afghanistan. In fact the Taliban were friends to the US, having developed a relationship to oust the Russians...all because of an Oil pipeline that is wanted to run through Afghanistan and Pakistan for US markets. Just what will occur when the Taliban come to ask the Russians to help them retake their country? Certainly it can not be ruled out that the Russians are already helping to arm the Taliban..given the protracted 60 years + prolonged interference and conflict that has been a complete failure by the West between Israel and Palestine.

Why would Russia stand by allowing the US to get a foothold outback to their homeland?...to go on its military campaign by calling anyone who disagrees with them as being terrorists, instead of defenders of their homeland? Freedom is in the eye of the beholder....certainly bombing the Taliban because they refused to give the Oil pipeline deal to Enron..is why the US created this fake war on terror, by orchestrating 911 and killing Americans to submit their lie to Congress to get the money and fear to wage this phoney war on terror. And many have fallen for the lie...except of course the Taliban who are fighting for their homeland. The Taliban are aware of being used as the US did to Iraq. In fact after 911, they did not invade Afghanistan until the US invaded Iraq first, to topple Saddam, who had nothing to do with 911. The fake war on Terror is only an excuse to label an enemy to forward their lies, and to cover their cowardness in concern to the thousands of duped soldiers who have died because this lie, orchestrated by the US.

India also really enjoys the Taliban who are helping India in it's struggle against Pakistan. It would behoove everyone to recognize how India would enjoy the respect of their more Fundamental counterpart the Taliban, by putting pressure on Pakistan in order to get support from India to ultimately seek India's diplomatic efforts and persuasion to help secure the end of the US.. occupation to Afghanistan.

Obama and Bush are really dreaming if they think they are going to ever get a pipeline through Afghanistan to benefit the US. Given the state of the World with Global Warming and the destruction of the Environment..it is clear the Oil Corporations are funding US military objectives...which has also contributed to the collapse of the US economy...because fuel prices remain so high, and ultimately will remain high.

Just think if the Taliban struck a deal with India and Pakistan to help them get US forces out of Afghanistan? Said pipeline would be a payoff, to not only benefit Afghanistan's Taliban, but to help India, and Pakistan relations. A duel line could also be administered to enhance Russia, and China supplies. Of course Oil would be sold to the US markets, but would not be controlled by the US.. Prices would reflect the true reasons...to fight global warming, and to keep said resources out of the hands of the global military monster in the US. The American way is not the Worlds Way...because the world is not about to be taken over, to loose their culture and traditions and be controlled by Military Force.

It has been said that the United States was a fuel economy laggard for almost quarter of century. And now, Obama administration seeks to raise Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards from 27.5 miles per gallon for cars and 24 mpg for light trucks, to 39 mpg for cars and 30 mpg for light truck by 2016. On the other hand, some people really would like to be an Oscar Meyer wiener.  Well, Oscar Meyer is currently jumping on the promo giveaway bandwagon, and they are giving out free hot dogs.  That's right, free hot dogs from Oscar Meyer (some would rather get free bratwurst w/sauerkraut and stone ground mustard, but we won't be ingrates), all you have to do is sign up on their website and you ought to get a coupon in the mail for a package of free hot dogs.  No short-term loan required.  If you wish you had some Oscar Meyer wieners, you won't need debt relief, just the free coupon. Well what be your projected period to close Guantanemo?

Remembering red tape, blue tape and international legal issues of repatriation of foreign prisoners etc. A president always has a problem that government departments, the military drag their feet under paper and legal issues.

Obama will close Guantanemo but has to work with the flow.

I would have it closed in 3 months. And outlaw Military tribunals. They aren't terrorists, the US is the terrorist. Send the people back to their home countries, with an apology and concessions for War Crimes committed by the US. Stop US arms manufacturing, and work toward achieving none military objectives with all countries. Ending War begins in the US.

Obama is the plug in the flow...as his allegiance is to support torture and GW Bush crimes.

The problem is yes there have been innocent Muslims imprisoned there but what about the guys that are ex-terrorist.  Then what about the countries that will execute prisoners being returned and then what about those countries that will not accept the prisoner back. Its not clear cut and of course your own solution is exemplary, it has not taken into account the underlying problems mabe many more than I have highlighted.

Obama has stated he is closing the prison and that does not mean that he will go back on his word.

Obama has not made one statement to the effect he is supporting GW Bush's crimes. He is not going to stop the torture and I agree with you there. That is supporting the Intelligent community and not George Bush.

On arms manufacture I agree totally but to a point of logic reasoning, that USA military arms and equipment should not be sold overseas. Nor should the technology be sold or shared. The logic being USA needs to protect it self.

Hi Bob....How do they say they are ex-terrorists...when they don't get a trial? Who are the terrorists, when guys come shooting into my homeland?  Round up the people with guns and call them terrorists, and lock them away? This is a grave embarrassment..by the US. What countries have said they will execute prisoners being sent back? And what countries say they will not accept prisoners back? They are not prisoners....they are kidnapped..and held as hostages to keep this phoney war on terror going.

Obama has stated he is closing the prison and that does not mean that he will go back on his word.

So he is a flip flopper of a sort...Changes his mind all the time...This is the kind of Change he was talking about during the Campaign. At least he is not like Reagan who had CRS.

Obama has not made one statement to the effect he is supporting GW Bush's crimes. Ah...and he has not said a word about the many unanswered questions concerning 911...and knowing that having so many unanswered questions places a huge road block up with waving red flags...on how can anyone wage a war on any country in the world, because of 911, when we truely have no idea who did it? No responsible government would do such a thing. We invaded Iraq who had no Weapons of Mass Destruction, and we idly standby and watch N. Korea explode 2 nuclear bombs. Makes perfect sense to you? Not me! And I am not advocating we invade N. Korea... Because 911 and the invasion of Iraq certainly gave N. Korea the real incentive to pursue their nuclear program.

He is not going to stop the torture and I agree with you there. That is supporting the Intelligent community and not George Bush.

Logic being also.....stop spreading the Military machine and Defense Contractor profits. Obama supports selling arms....that is why he wants Palestine to become a State..so they have a new Legal Trading Partner....
