New York City, Nov 4th - Yesterday was a historic day for many as Barack Obama became our nations next president. Just by traversing the streets of New York City one could feel and quite literally see the excitement. Yesterday if one made their way to lower Manhattan in Union square park last night there was a gigantic American flag being held up by 25-50 people under and around the flag. Passerby's also joined in the celebration at times running under the gigantic flailing banner. The flag spanned an entire city block which is roughly 1/5 of a mile.

Later on that night when details of the election were more certain and the election results were confirmed I arrived on an uptown A train at Wall street and was greeted by shouts of celebration. They did this for every single stop right up to W 4th street celebrating president elect Barack Obama. In all my years it's hard to say I've known this degree of political enthusiasm and hope in America.

Thanks guys! As a reporter I have to say this was really something. I was really surprised at the enthusiam in the hearts of some of these teenagers and really young people. The flag thing was started intially by NYU students I believe. It's actually sort of inspiring to see the next generation having hope.

JTshockley, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Is there real enthusiasm for what is really ahead? Did everyone sign on to an America that will look like this?

Here is a sample compiled from statements made by Barack Obama and the Democrat Political Party leadership:

** Free speech will be under attack through the revival of "Fairness Doctrine" - (Sen. Charles Schumer, last week)

** 401K retirement programs will become the property of the federal government and reduced to a maximum 3% growth opportunity - (Congress Democrats after Argentina pursued a similar policy)

** More babies will not make it to see the light of day than less (even those who might have seen the light but officially did not) - (voted on 3 time by then State Senator Obama in Illinois)

** Tax rates will be increased and less taxes will be actually collected - (this is what happened during the Carter Presidency ... and anytime tax rates are raised)

** The national debt will continue to increase along with the size of federal government - (do you actually think the federal government will get smaller under an Obama Presidency?)

** Less energy will be drilled, mined, transported, fused, and otherwise placed in a way our freedoms are increased and made more viable - (Democrat Party led agenda in Congress without much opposition for the last three decades)

** One's vote on the job, at work, will no longer be secret - (The Democrat Party bone thrown to unions for their support, and does anyone think this policy is really OK?)

** Less free trade and more economic isolation will become the trends - (from statements made by Barack Obama over this last year of campaigning)

** True respect and stature for the United States will suffer as our support for Israel takes a step backward - (given statements made by Barack Obama to the Hamas leadership on his wonderful international trip this last summer)

** The balance of power in Washington DC will have all power with little balance - (we all can count the seats and the attitudes - Barney Frank called for a 25% reduction of our Military forces without reason during these dangerous times)

I do not think the majority of Americans were actually voting for these items to be handled in just this way, but each of these items are a part of the power without balance that will become the 44th Presidency.

You might be assuming one thing. I'm doing something other than being an unbiased journalist. This is the news. This is what they were doing. Not me. You might also be assuming I voted for him or put my hope in man. I don't. Everything you said is valid and I acknowledge it. I love the truth. But this is truth also. The world is rejoicing. For better or worse...

JTshockley, Japanese Officials Fear Obama's Election Could Boost Chicago's Olympic Chances:

Japanese Olympic officials have expressed concern that the election of Barack Obama to the U.S. presidency could harm Tokyo's bid and boost his hometown of Chicago in its bid to host the 2016 Summer Games.

Tokyo, along with Madrid, Spain and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil are also in the running to host the Olympics in 2016.

Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda said Wednesday he wonders what the International Olympic Committee's reaction would be when Mr. Obama appears in a presentation for Chicago.

Senior Japan Olympic Committee executive board member Tomiaki Fukuda added that Mr. Obama's popularity and speechmaking ability could make things "tough for Japan.''

Let us hope that this Flag of Hope shall keep waving after the winds of celebration have ceased.

I liked your story which personalizes the New York city celebration. Since I graduated NYU in the 80s, I can relate to Union Square and the area.
