January 20th, Inauguration Day 2009, will be a huge event across the United States and President-elect Barack Obama wants to make sure that all Americans have the opportunity to join in the celebrations.

With that in mind, Obama plans to host a first ever "Neighborhood Inaugural Ball" in Washington D.C. that will be a primarily free event held in conjunction with the rest of the inaugural proceedings — and will also include real-time, interactive webcasts and text messaging elements to connect with "neighborhoods across the country".

It's exciting to witness an American president who truly understands the power and potential of new media, both to engage actual, physical communities and to connect them virtually, socially, and digitally.

This will have a lasting and profound effect on the ability for individual Americans to come together, create, share, and participate in new forms of shared, lived experience.

In this sense, new media can truly inspire new kinds of social engagement. And that's about as close to a working model of democracy as you can get.

Barack Obama will host the first ever "Neighborhood Inaugural Ball" in Washington D.C.

The free event will take place at the Washington Convention Center as part of this year's inauguration during the evening of January 20th.

"This is an Inauguration for all Americans," Obama says. "I wanted to make sure that we had an event that would be open to our new neighborhood here in Washington, D.C., and also neighborhoods across the country. Michelle and I look forward to joining our fellow Americans across the country during this very special event."

The ball will feature interactive components, such as webcasts and text messaging, that will serve to link neighborhoods across the U.S. in real time with the event.

The gala is just one way that Obama's team is seeking to engage Washington, D.C. residents. Additional efforts are being made to involve youth in the events.
The announcement of the gala event comes on the heels of another opportunity focused at bringing Washington residents to the inaugural activities. D.C. high school and middle school students have the chance to submit an essay detailing how they would use community service to contribute to the improvement of their neighborhood.

Three tickets, reserved for the bleachers along the parade route next to the presidential reviewing stand in front of the White House, will be given to the students of the winning essays from each school.

1 Million Iraqis and thousands of US soldiers dead in BushCheney's illegal Iraq War. I suppose 'God' only disapproves of murder if you're still in the womb..

I am so excited to be able to participate in this historical event.  My girlfriend and I will be coming from California to witness history in the making.  We have been givin a leader that has fostered hope across the nation; hope for every age, race and walk of life...a new dawn.  I too would like to know how to obtain four tickets to the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball.

If supporting Obama makes me guilty then I guess I'm guilty!  But I'd rather be guilty of supporting Obama than to be a ignorant person like you.  Bush and cheney are responsible for the deaths of thousands of our troops in a war based on lies . . . that a bigger crime than anything you're babbling about.

Rev. (sic) Spitz's opinion on the beliefs of others should carry no weight whatsoever. He uses his own website to try to make heroes out of murdering terrorists like Paul Hill, Eric Rudolph, John Salvi, and James Kopp. He is so delusional that he thinks that he was ordained by the International Gospel Crusade, a denomination that only exists in his imagination.

Since I live next to the convention center and have been enjoying the coming and going of all the people, I have tried to find tickets for the Neighborhood Ball. However, when the site went live, it already said, "this event is at capacity."

I really don't mind all of the tour buses and people coming and going in the neighborhood, it is exciting but wish I could take part as well.....

Mr. Barack Obama, spending 20 years in Jeremiah Wright’s church, listening to anti-white hatred day after day does not qualify him to be president of the United States.    Barack Obama, someone who believes in murdering helpless unborn babies by abortion should not be president.    Barack Obama who believes in desecrating Holy Matrimony by allowing sodomites to blaspheme God by getting married should not be president   Your support makes you as guilty before God as he is.

This picture was taken in Washington, DC the week after the 2008 Presidential Election. It shows the banner for Neuroscience 2008, which was being held at the Convention Center. Over 30,000 neuroscientists and students attended the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience. I covered the event for my Brain Science Podcast. You can learn more at http://brainsciencepodcast.com/.

Thanks for keeping us so informed, but how do we get tickets for this ball?  I too will be going to DC to witness this historic event, but can't get a ticket for anything.  I keep reading how inclusive the inauguration is going to be, but every event is by invitation.  Please help.  I've been trying for months!!!

Although my fiance and I are generally pessimistic and skeptical when it comes to politicians, we have been supporters of Obama since his 2004 DNC speech. We have purchased plane tickets to travel from California to DC to witness what we hope will the beginning of a new chapter in American History. Despite having a modest income, we would like to attend the neighborhood ball--does anyone have recommendations on who to contact or where to look for tickets?

As a DC resident, I am getting totally psyched about all of the Balls around town. Does anyone know of any other "must see" Balls? The info about the Ball at the old Post Office was helpful. Not far away, the Blue Diamond Inaugural Ball will take place at the Natural History Museum (Jackson Browne singing wow!). What other Balls are out there?

There other NP postings regarding events that lead up to the Inauguration.  The swearing-in ceremony is free and tickets are distributed by your local and state legislators last month.  Hope the basic tips are helpful.

Yeah, I read up on that ball!  It's donating profits to support Universal Healthcare.  Great that money is actually going to something worthwhile.  That ball is going to be great- I heard Gram Nash will be there, too.  Cool.  I've also heard about The Green Ball on the 17th.  Kicking off the week with Wyclef--not bad!

Blue Diamond Ball is my pick. A Night at the Museum.

WWJD? Tolerance&Forgiveness

You have missed the whole point - Jesus was about embracing everyone with compassion - “Inasmuch as you have done it for the least of My brothers, you have done it unto Me.”
Your intolerance and hatred makes you the anti-Jesus - you failed the test.  Good thing he is all about forgiveness cause you are needing a whole lot of it.
Really, most forget to study the man and his actions - they have all the wrong answers to "WWJD?" !  Spewing hate is not on the list.

I, like Ms. Wheeler will be traveling to District to witness the inauguration and would like to know how to get tickets to the Neighborhood Ball.  Everything is either being kept very close to the chest or tooooooo expensive for the budgets of community organizers like myself.  I am traveling with my two daughters and would love to purchase, if affordable, tickets to this ball since I will be living extremely close to the convention center.

It you speak out against all the previous presidents who were for abortion and were biggots and racists?  I think not!!  According to you, they weren't qualified either, but they still drove this country into the ground.  As well, it appears that you've spent your entire life listening and being brainwashed by black hatred and white superiority.  That certainly doesn't qualify you as a human being, but I bet you think you are don't you?

I am a resident of Baltimore, does anyone know how I can get tickets to the ball?

Rev Spitz, it's a done deal. Obama is the commander in chief, so get over it!

Now back to the issue at hand. Tickets, Tickets, Tickets. I actually got lucky to get, Swearing in Tickets. It was not easy, but I got them :). Would love to get tickets to the Neighborhood Ball, but that's looking bleak. The tickets were released to Public Officials and Community Organizations to be distributed to D.C. Residents. However, it appears to me that some of these trusted officials are selling the tickets to GreatSeats.Com, as they are now selling tickets for $2400.00. What a scam. I'm sure that is not what Obama intended to happen but people are making lots of money off of this Inauguration.  If anyone knows how folks from out of town like myself(California) can get tickets, please reply :)

Ms. Beg To DIffer

I pray that you have time to talk with God and learn that you can still love the person and hate the sin. You passing judgement on why he does what he does doesnt make you any better in the eyes of God. A sin is just that... a sin. No one sin is better or worse than the next. So, if he is being judged at the gates of heaven, then you too for persecuting him here on earth without trying to pray for him will have you judged at the same gates. I hear your frustrations, but yellling that "A Hurricane is coming" isnt going to make people believe you any faster than if you just prayed for their safety. We hear enough negative. Start telling people what positive things they can do. If you are against abortion...well stop putting it on one president and you go out into the streets and start promoting Life. Condemning another soul is the fastest way to condemn your own. So even in this message, I reach out to you and say that I hear you. I will send up prayers on your behalf and I am not mad at you. You are a great person and your passion is recognized... I pray that you can find a positive way to help instead of condemning. Your love for God is admirable.....I just pray that more people like yourself will learn to love in spite of. God bless!
