Obama Immigration Amnesty Announcement: Watch Live Here
Obama Announces Amnesty for Young Illegal Immigrants
US President Barack Obama is announcing that the US Justice Department will not seek to deport young illegal immigrants with clean criminal records. You can watch the Obama immigration announcement live via the video player below.
[Bonus: here's the video of The Daily Caller's Neil Munro hecking Obama. It's at the intersection of Rude and Pointless. To be honest, though, it's worth Munro's getting banned from future press conferences just so we can have an even vaguely-controversial video highlight.]
The plan was framed not as a change, but as a sane application of existing immigration laws. The plan, which would affect up to 800,000 illegal immigrants, would spare a young person from deportation provided that he or she:
- Was brought to the USA before the age of16;
- Is currently below the age of 30
- Has remained int he US for at least five continuous years;
- Has no criminal record;
- Has graduated from an American high school/earned a GED/served in the military
Fulfilling these requirements would allow the young immigrant to apply for two-year work visas. We expect some serious pushback from the GOP, though the plan is strikingly similar to that of Marco Rubio (R-FL).
While Hispanic voters overwhelmingly prefer Obama to Romney, they also disapprove of how Obama has been handling immigration during his first four years.
