Hysteria, exasperation, engineering discipline, mitigation, cool heads

It's a mess in the Gulf of New Mexico and it is spreading. BP did a lousy job of managing its business from the get-go. They took too many risks and short-changed the world of responsibility. Management must go. Restructuring must ensue. Board of Directors should be disgraced and this is a black mark on British business and the American counterpart.

Now, the Obama Administration is getting a grip and must set the stage for a 100 year effort to mitigate and repair damage. Congress must put it on the books, a one hundred year claim against BP and whatever paper trail the emerges from its divestiture. Fix it so it never escapes them.

Obama is on the hook to get this mess masterfully managed. It is his legacy and next term on the line.

“News Alert: More than 1 million gallons likely spewing from BP leak, study says

New estimate suggests that, if the flow has been more or less consistent since the April 20 blowout, approximately 53.6 million to 64.3 million gallons of oil have emerged from the well. That is roughly five to six times the amount spilled in Alaskan waters in 1989 by the Exxon Valdez.

The new figures, obtained Thursday by The Washington Post and soon to be officially announced by the U.S. Geological Survey, indicate that early estimates of the flow rate by the federal government and oil giant BP were not even close to the mark.”
