Vice President Biden To Lay Wreath At Arlington National Cemetery

President Obama is taking heat from the right wing media for honoring veterans, past and present, in Illinois instead of at the tomb of Unknown Soldier in the Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington.

On Monday, Obama is scheduled to participate in a Memorial Day ceremony at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill.

Right wing commentators like Glen Beck had this to say on his radio program.

"Obama is skipping out on a Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington Cemetery because he'll be in Chicago on vacation. I'm sorry, I don't ever, ever question the president's vacation. I didn't under Bush, I didn't under Clinton, I don't under Obama." He later stated: "I have no problem with the man taking a vacation. But I am sick and tired -- sick and tired -- of people believing the lie that this administration has respect for the police or has respect for the soldiers of our country. I'm tired of it."

Vice President Joe Biden will lay the wreath at Arlington instead while Obama is at the service in Illinois. The President while be in Chicago for the weekend with his family for a vacation his first trip back to his home since February 2009

Media Matters points out the Republican president's including Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush appointment other officials to the lay the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Memorial Day.

It just doesn't matter what he says.

President Obama IS honoring the troops at The Lincoln National Cemetery. Lincoln started the National cemeteries. Reagan missed 4 @ Arlington, GHW Bush never celebrated at Arlington...3 he was in Maine on vacation...during the Gulf War, GW Bush skipped 2 at Arlington...Clinton did go all 8 times however....Facts are facts. The President on vacation is not like others on vacation....he will still be dealing with the country. He doesn't take the phone off the hook.

The truth is that no president has missed the Arlington ceremony on Memorial Day since 1992. That year, former President Bush attended a ceremony in Maine while campaigning for re-election. In 1992 our nation was not at war. President Bush was himself a decorated war hero in World War II, risking life and limb to complete bombing missions in the Pacific and losing crewmates in the battles. His commitment to honoring his brothers-in-arms was never in doubt. So comparing 1992 to 2010 is not exactly an apples to apples debate.

No - the truth is that GW Bush skipped the Arlington ceremony in 2007 - in the middle of 2 WARS that he started.  On Monday, Obama is scheduled to participate in a Memorial Day ceremony at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL.  As the grand-daughter, daughter & wife of veterans (my husband is still active duty, currently deployed), I have no problem with this.  The important thing is that our fallen heroes are remembered, regardless of where you are.

My family have been here since before the Revolutionary War and have had Family fighting in every war this country has been in and I deeply resent the fact that on this of all days Obama is holding a party to honor, not our soldiers, but that great American patriot Paul McCartney.

Excuse me but the war was started by terrorists, who were let into this country by the Clinton regime, when they killed over 3,000 of our fellow Americans. Under this regime  it isn't if we will be hit again, it is a matter of when.

Bush Honors Fallen Heroes on Memorial Day at Arlington WASHINGTON, May 28, 2007 – Evoking the memories of citizens who died defending America throughout history and urging a new generation to safeguard freedoms for which previous generations made sacrifices, President Bush commemorated Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery here today.  Bush only missed Memorial Day in Arlington in 2003.  He was at the Normandy American Cemetery where 9,387 Americans are buried.  Please get your facts right.  Obama is the first to skip out in a time of war.

Actually Bush skipped it twice not once. One time he was at the WTC and the other in Normandy. He never deliberately would leave DC to go to another State in order to avoid going to Arlington or to go on vacation.

bush did not start this war, we were attacked. Why do so many forget that. Obama continues to celebrate muslim holidays and wants to have America recognize them and they are the ones that want us dead. Everyone that voted for this foreigner for president is an not a true American.

Perhaps you should do some reading about who attacted whom.  I'm just so angry seeing uninformed people, such as yourself repeating the same lies.  If you don't know what you're talking about you should just shut up.  If the 9/11 horror was as the government and the Pentagon say it was, then there were a bunch of Saudi hijackers and one non-Saudi.  If the USA was replying to an attack then they should have invaded Saudi Arabia.  But, since the USA didn't attack Saudi Arabia, the there must have been a whole lot of lieing going on.And that is about the only truth about 9/11 so far.The Bush lie that led to the Invasion of Iraq was the lie about weapons of mass destruction.  Some people say the USA found WMD but that also is untrue.  The chemicals that were used as weapons in the American/Iraqi invasion of Iran.  It was Reagan that got those chemicals into Iraq.  The chemicals had deteriorated to a nonusable pile of junk.  They found yellow cake but that wasn't even good for a dirty bomb.  The yellow cake had been imported legally when France was building a nuclear reactor that was illegaly bombed by Israel.Do some reading, please.ButterflyStorms.blog.caintolerablebehaviour.active.ws/      butterflystorms.bravehost.com/intolerablebehaviour.premium.ws/

Obama is a loser when it comes to the military. We'll celebrate our "memorial day" remembering his shady choices when he's up for re-election

Hi Divinehammer-----Im not saying that the Presidents that you mentioned above did the right thing . I did notice that each one of them were veterans, some we decorated vets. Clinton went to Canada to dodge the draft and march against the United States of America, Oboma could have been a veteran had he wanted to be. I was.

So you're a vet.  Big deal.

I'm not really surprised that he doesn't take the time to visit Arlington Cemetary and lay the wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier...just deeply saddened by this and everything he does to discredit and bring shame on our great USA.

4
Stacy Beyrodt

FALSE. He DID lay a wreath on the tomb already, today in fact. Check your facts.

Stacy, Today isn't Memorial Day...that's the whole point!!! He's the Commander and Chief of our country's military. Sahme on any President, Democrat or Republican that doesn't take the time to be at Arlington for this specific day!!!!

As a former Marine with a son in the Army, just back from Iraq, and in my family 6 generations of service men and women who have fought in every conflict our country has been involved  I am deeply hurt about this president.  The trip to Chicago is little more that a political Sleight of hand move.  Obama is going to a place where he can do his speaking and be around those who want him there.  Also, this is not the first time that Obama has done the Lincoln Cemetery over the Arlington.  Additionally, Obama is going to the Chicago South Side where he can 'play to the crowd' and use the preverbal race card without anyone accusing him of a blatant act.  I am not a bigot and I have a black son-in-law and an asian sister-in-law who I have asked this situation about and they both agree.  When are we finally able to tell the politicians to stop 'playing to the crowds' and start listening the to people who elected them for the betterment of the country as a whole.  The Commander and Chief of the USA should be at the one place in the country that unifies us and not divide us.

I personaly cant do anything about what the past Presidents have done but many of them were decorated military men. I feel it is the responsibility of the Comander in Chief of theUnitd States Military to place the wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier not his aid.(until he becomes the President GOD FORBID) Biden is Obomas aid.Oboma could have been a veteran had he wanted to. I was.

I just picked up my brother from a 1 a.m. flight home. He's Navy- going on ten years now. As we begin our drive home, the first topic he brings up is this. He tells me how angry he is that OUR PRESIDENT- HIS Commander in Chief will not be laying the wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington Cemetary. He tells me bad enough Obama also "skipped out" on participating in National Prayer Day- he now makes this choice? What does this say about OUR President? Does he really respresent US or is he just representing HIMSELF?   I think it's an INSULT to all who have served and are serving OUR country. It's an INSULT to my family. We didn't vote for Obama yet we fully supported him once he became OUR President. One would think he would (for lack of a better term) "return the favor". Dissappointed again- Mrs. M.P. ~* Proud Navy Family. Stay Safe.*~

On Monday, Obama is scheduled to attend a Memorial Day ceremony at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL.  As the grand-daughter, daughter & wife of veterans (my husband is still active duty, currently deployed), I have no problem with this, and definitely don't feel "insulted".  The important thing is that our fallen heroes are remembered, regardless of where you are. Oh, BTW - Ronald Reagan skipped the Arlington ceremony in 1983, George H.W. Bush missed it in 1992 & in 2007, George W. Bush remained in Texas rather than attend the Arlington ceremony.  Were you as "disappointed" and "insulted" then, too?

On Memorial Day, Obama will be attending a ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.  I am the grand-daughter, daughter & wife of veterans (my husband is still active duty, currently deployed) & I have no problem with this & am certainly not "insulted".  Where someone chooses to honor our heroes is not important.  Oh, BTW - were you "disappointed" & "insulted" when Reagan missed the Arlington ceremony in 1981, 1983, 1987 & 1988?  Or by the fact that GHW Bush NEVER attended?  Or that GW Bush missed in 2002 & 2007?

Don't you have to be a citizen to be a veteran?  LMAO!

No, you don't.

I am a peacetime veteran mid 70's to the 80's I thank God I never had to face war or death of a fallen brother face to face, but Im  proud that I served my country and I wore the uniform with pride.  I would be a liar if i said I agreed with every order I was given, but because thats the Military I obeyed. I have to say I would be hardpressed to follow a commander in chief who puts familly vacation above the honor of the thousands of fallen brothers and sisters that have paid the ultimate price for this country since the birth of it!  His place is Arlington! It is the most hollowed piece of ground this country has! As president the country comes first and foremost above all family and his own interest, and if he can't except that he has no business in Office!

Other Presidents have skipped the Arlington ceremonies too. Regan missed four times; Once in 81’(I’ll give him that because it was right after the  assassination attempt), 83’, ’87, and ’88. Bush Sr. never went, and George W. Bush missed once in 2002. I find it funny.  You know why we didn’t hear a hoot when a President didn’t attend ceremonies at Arlington in the past? No one was bothered by it until now. You know why the Right is bothered by it now? Because some Right-wing media nut told you that you should be bothered. They are all about Obama bashing right now anyway, anyhow. Forget facts and forget history. Throw the mud and hope it sticks. Not one person bashed Bush when he wasn’t there when we were at war in 2002. People should do themselves a favor and think for themselves. Don’t let others tell you what to think. Think. You’ll learn something that way.   Obama is speaking and paying respect to soldiers at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. There is more than one national cemetery. Are they no less worthy? Memorial Day is about honoring veterans. Why does it matter so much if one chooses to do it elsewhere? Paying respect is what counts.   www.usmemorialday.org/remarks.html

I'm sick and tired of military people leeching off my country. They've been living off my tax money for too long - I think all you military people should go out and do something productive instead of feeding off the American taxpayer like blood sucking leeches. We live in a socialist country - ask yourself what other government in the world has a military as big as ours? And having a military so big means *MILLIONS* of families take government money and government provided health care every month, then scream and holler about how big government is bad. You socialist soldier scumbags can rot in hell for all I care. Earn your own living instead of living off of us - you gutless cowards.Anybody who makes a single dime from the military is a socialist government loving scumbag leech destroying this country.Support Glenn Beck and *true* libertarians like Rand Paul. Subscribe to their secret email list and get the real goods on what is going on. Learn how the government, through its control of the military is remaking the USA into a giant socialist camp.YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
