US President Barack Obama has picked federal judge Sonia Sotomayor as his first Supreme Court Nominee. If approved by the Senate, Sotomayor would be the first hispanic judge to serve at that level. Supreme court appointments are among a president's largest influences upon domestic policy, as such appointments are for life.
A political moderate, Sotomayor became the first Hispanic federal judge in New York State, as well as the youngest judge in the Southern District of New York.
Baseball fans remember her for her ruling in the 1995 baseball strike that led to the cancellation of that year's World Series (she ruled on the players' side).
Sotomayor was first nominated to a federal bench by George HW Bush, and later to the federal appeals court by Bill Clinton.
