Sen. Barack Obama will not be in New Orleans for a presidential forum Saturday, his campaign said this evening.

"Senator Obama will be in Chicago this weekend spending time with his family," said Obama spokeswoman Shannon Gilson.

The National Conference of Black Mayors had announced that Obama and then-rival Sen. Hillary Clinton had confirmed to appear at a presidential candidates' forum Saturday at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Kinetra Smith, a conference spokeswoman, said Obama and Clinton had both confirmed their participation weeks ago. But Gilson said the Obama campaign never scheduled him to attend.

The draw of the event also suffered when Obama clinched the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday night and Clinton's campaign indicated she would bow out of the race Saturday at an event in Washington.

First let me start by saying that our ever so smart mayor verbally"dissed" McCain and the Republican Party for never speaking at this convention and now that Obama isn't everyone is making excuses as to why. He just made history, it was scheduled to be a debate, he wants to appear more white, etc. etc. My gosh when are you guys going to wake up and realize that this guy has no idea what he wants and or what he stands for. And just for the record I am a black man. (Not that it matters) But can you seriously tell me that a man who was involved with a church for over 20 years did not believe what the preacher was preaching, or that every other thing he has ever had pressure over has caved to it is deserving to be our leader. Now let me state this I donot want McCain to be President but if my choices are McCain or Obama, heaven help us and let McCain win. Obama will do whatever the media and/or public perception wants him to and I for one am tired of paying for people who don't want to help themselves. Lets please get off the race issue and realize that Obama is not the next coming of christ just because he is black. Wake up my black friends and realize that Obama is not the answer. God Bless!

Guess the demographics don't require him to continue to woo black voters.

René, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Not being up on American politics, Obama is a senator, Right? What purpose would he serve showing up at a mayors conference?  Perhaps after all the touring he did, spending time with his family is the right decision.

Originally McCain, Obama and Clinton were scheduled for a Presidential candidates' forum and these are prominent black leaders from around the country. This is the second time Obama declined to appear before black leaders in New Orleans. Perhaps he feels he doesn't need to win the black vote, after all they only make up about 12 percent of the population, down from 17 percent. Or perhaps he feels he already has them wrapped up. Tho he didn't neglect to go crow at the Chicago Olympic 2016 rally.
