Seriously? Does Mr. McCain with all of his years of service to the American people really want to be partly responsible for a possible assassination attempt? He and Governor Palin seem to be leading extremists within our own country down that disturbing path. I'm extremely concerned about the reactions of certain individuals within the crowds attending the McCain and Palin rallies.

I worry that McCain and Palin may be inadvertently stirring up the most extreme sentiments within their party, to a point that the safety and well being of Barack Obama may be called into question. If Obama is elected in November, have McCain and Palin already created a sentiment at the extreme right that would motivate an unstable individual to harm Mr. Obama? If so, wouldn't Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin be partly responsible for encouraging their constituents (albeit the most extreme) to draw inaccurrate conclusions and use them as justification for harming the newly elected President? I'm not suggesting McCain/Palin are actively looking for this result, but I am asking them to consider this is a disturbing possibility they should carefully consider when choosing which associations and personal attacks to make against Mr. Obama.

Isn't this reckless behavior on the part of the McCain team? It seems this is all an obvious attempt to allow the Republican base to draw the most negative and extreme conclusions from an association with a former domestic terrorist that is probably true, but meaningless in terms of Mr. Obama's credibility and good standing. The tactic appears to be an overt attempt on the part of Mr. McCain's camp to grab the most extreme factions within the Republican party, and invite them to draw the worst possible conclusions about Mr. Obama. One possible ramification of which is simply too horrible to ignore. They are playing on irrational fears within their base by lightly promoting the mischaracterization of Mr. Obama, who is a Christian born in Hawaii. They seem to want the truth of Obama's background to be twisted into a racial profile better fitting a middle-eastern terrorist. By overdramatizing Obama's association with a former domestic terrorist, they are promoting the next level of hysteria about the unknowns in Mr. Obama's background. They know that the Republican base will look no further into Obama's background, because many have already pre-judged him. Most were looking for McCain's team to dig up scary skeletons in Obama's closet in the first place. McCain and Palin are promoting the idea that Americans should question who Barack Obama is, and in so doing – are helping them to decide he is a terrorist sympathiser at the least, and at worst, a terrorist himself.

So, where does that connection come into play? Did Obama say or show he was pal's with this person? Did he agree with the over 40 year old actions of the former terrorist? No. In fact, he denounced those actions. But Palin, in particular, would like the Republican base to believe there was more to the situation, and have them draw all the worst possible conclusions. How dangerous. The result has been at least one shout from the crowd during a recent McCain rally "Terrorist" from a man in the audience who replied to McCains question; "Who is the Real Barack Obama?" as well as a shout from a Palin rally "Kill Him" and "Treason." The videos are posted with this commentary. Please notice McCain's pause and lowering of his eyebrows after the man from the audience shouts out. I am not sure what McCain is thinking at that moment. But that shout must have been a clue to McCain about just how strongly an extreme personality would read his remarks. I hope Senator McCain will think long and hard about the reactions of the people attending his rallies, and be very mindful of the ramifications of his choices.

If Obama is to be considered a terrorist or a sympathiser by McCain's Republican base, then I believe McCain and Palin will ultimately be seen as an accessories to a horrible crime by the rest of us, should the worst ever come to pass.

I pray I am only a big fat worry wart. I like to believe that the our country breeds only the best people. Unfortunately, I don't have enough evidence to believe that sentiment fully. Kennedy, Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. - all died at the hands of assassins. Is it possible their killers were motivated by something they heard a polarizing leader say? Possibly. But most likely, the assassins were simply all "Mavericks."

Please be careful Senator McCain and Governor Palin. I am begging you.

A side note: I am a former McCain constituent, originally from Phoenix, Arizona. I voted Republican and "for" McCain when I was in the US Air Force. As a military man, I admired him and looked up to him for his wisdom in the face of adveristy. I supported McCain during the Lincoln Savings mess. I knew him as a better man than the one that has emerged over the past year. Frankly, I miss the John McCain I once thought I knew and supported.

Very well put Jeff. This whole thing is getting ugly. Luckily for all of us I think its gonna backfire on McPalin if it hasnt already. I pray as you do that there isn't some nutjob out there that thinks it his calling to take to take out Obama. God help us all if that happens.
