US President Barack Obama has praised the opposition candidate in Iran's disputed presidential election.
Mr Obama said Mir Hossein Mousavi had captured the imagination of groups in Iran that were interested in opening up to the world.
He spoke of the bravery of protesters in the face of "outrageous" violence.
Mr Obama's comments came hours after foreign ministers from the G8 nations issued a statement "deploring" the post-election violence in Iran.
The problem is if Mousavi gained power it would be much less power than the supreme leader of whom is the real problem in Iran

Be careful what you wish for Obama

I love Obama but one critique of him I have or of past American administrations as well is this thing about "praising leaders that stand up to oppression" which is fine and dandy however, there is never that much follow through, none that I can see at least. I still remember Obama giving praise to Tsvangirai for standing up to Mugabe, then Tsvangirai formed a Unity government with Mugabe. Zimbabweans are still suffering and being killed and when Obama asked Tsvangirai about it, Tsvangirai insisted the violence had gone done when Amnesty International, BBC and his own minister insisted otherwise. All I'm saying is that it is okay to praise these guys but always be wary of these stories always follow a common trend - David beats Goliath, then David becomes the new Goliath. He should praise them but also insist that this praise is not an endorsement but rather one that comes with expectations of these leaders following through on their promises to the people. Robert Mugabe got this praise and the 70s, universities gave him honorary degrees and the like but look where Zimbabwe is now because of him.

So much for O wanting to be the "leader" of the world.
