Obama Presents Saudi King With 2009 Chevy Malibu
While not exactly breaking news, I ran into this story (word for word and un credited) as news in a local publication, and went looking for further information and substantiation on the internet.
In his first major trip to the Middle East since taking the oath of office, President Barack Obama today presented Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah with a 2009 Chevy Malibu.
I am sure Obama was thinking "All I get is some stinking Gold Bling?" as he was presented with a gold chain.
While it is highly unorthodox for a U.S. president to present a foreign leader with a midsized automobile, Mr. Obama was upbeat during the presentation, telling the Saudi monarch, "If you like it, there's plenty more where that came from."
Mr. Obama touted the Malibu's "fantastic gas mileage," adding, "not that you'd have any trouble getting gas around here."
So seriously what kind of message was the administration trying to send by giving a fuel efficient Malibu to one of the Richest persons in the world and ruler of one of the largest fields of oil ? This is a ruler used to being driven around in such cars a half million dollar Rolls Royce Phantom (bullet proof I am sure).
I wonder if it was a Base model ? or something a little more extreme up in the $30k range ?
White House sources said that they hoped Mr. Obama's goodwill gesture would also serve to promote the American auto industry, or as one source put it, "If King Abdullah likes the Malibu, maybe he'll give one to each of his wives. That'll help make room for the 2010's."
Wow... good joke..but wow... if that was really said by someone with any official capacity, even off the record, I can not imagine someone keeping their job
But the Saudi king seemed to be skeptical of the gift, hesitating a moment as Mr. Obama handed him the keys.
"Is it going to be hard to get parts for this?" he asked.
And Bam.. there it is... Sandy sandled foot placed firmly against our presidential backside. On one hand a good natured joke (possibly), yet on the other a WWWF smackdown sized insult making humor of the ailing US economy and a company which is handing out pink slips like food stamps.
My guess given the source Huffington - we make it up.com, and that I have not seen any public outcry yet from the right... is that this is merely another case of an internet blog/joke/impersonation story being passed around as news.... God I hope so....
