Obama: Goal to Finish the Job in Afghanistan

MSNBC NEWS VIDEO

President Barack Obama said Tuesday that he plans to announce his decision on whether to commit tens of thousands of new U.S. forces to the stalemated war inAfghanistan "after Thanksgiving."

In comments at a press conference with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he added that his intention is to "finish the job" in Afghanistan but that the Afghan people "ultimately have to provide for their own security."

Military officials and others expect Obama to settle on a middle-ground option that would deploy an eventual 32,000 to 35,000 U.S. forces to the 8-year-old conflict. That rough figure has stood as the most likely option since before Obama's last large war council meeting earlier this month, when he tasked military planners with rearranging the timing and makeup of some of the deployments.

What I see once again is creative journalism Obama has not once stated the amount of troops he will be committing, the military source has not been confirmed. Plus the maths are completely wrong concerning the center ground. Of which is about 20,000 troops.

MSNBC oh say no more... lol

Yep we have to wait for Obama.....

It says leaning towards and within those figures 7000 troops are NATO not all US related. 4000 are trainers and not combatant. Can't see how such a small newspaper got the story however perhaps it checked out US military bases to see who was on standby.

Seemingly 23,000 where on standby for deployment at a guess?

I think that mcclatchy.s are mixing fact and creative journalism. I could be wrong however we will see when Obama releases the actual facts.

As it now stands, the plan calls for the deployment over a nine-month period beginning in March of three Army brigades from the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky., and the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y., and a Marine brigade from Camp Lejeune, N.C., for as many as 23,000 additional combat and support troops.
