Today it was made known that US President Barack Obama will travel to Denmark for the October 2nd vote to choose the capital of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games after all. Chicago, USA, is one of the contenders. Obama is scheduled to give a speech to promote Chicago as a candidate city. Just weeks ago, Obama made it clear that he won't be traveling to Copenhagen to give support to Chicago 2016 bid, citing other important domestic issues to take care of as the reason for him skipping the vote. Today it was announced that the American President will in fact go to Denmark on Friday, October 2, to give his speech and travel back the same day.

"We could not be more pleased to welcome President Barack Obama to our delegation for the IOC selection of the host city for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games," said USOC Chairman Larry Probst in a statement. "His attendance -- along with that of First Lady Michelle Obama, Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett and other key members of his staff -- speaks volumes regarding his administration's unprecedented support for this bid and for the worldwide Olympic Movement."

Other national leaders, including the King of Spain, the newly elected Prime Minister of Japan, and the President of Brazil promised to make their way to Denmark to support their city bids.

So far, it looks like Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago have equal chances. Chicago seems to be the underdog in this race, so the announcement of Obama's presentation in Copenhagen to support Chicago's bid is an important morale booster for the US bid committee. Rio-de-Janeiro received the highest score from the IOC report, and appears to be leading the race. The vote will be a tough one, according to the President of IOC Jacques Rogues.
