Obama to visit Buffalo, NY in White House to Main Street Tour
The White House to Main Street Tour Is Coming To Buffalo, NY
President Obama is scheduled to arrive in Buffalo, NY aboard Air Force One on Thursday, May 13th.
Focus On Job Growth and Economy
Business First reported in January the jobless rate for the Buffalo-Niagara Falls market in the final month of 2009 was 8.5 percent, up from 7.1 percent in December 2008 and 8.0 percent in November. In March 2010, New York State Department of Labor reports the unemployment rate at 8.6 percent.
Good paying jobs are key to improving the economy and the President is expected to discuss that with selected local small business owners while he's here. A woman who runs a local day care center tells Eyewitness News that she'd like the opportunity to bend the President's ear about the challenges she faces. "There's a lot of families that have been affected with the cuts in child care. We've lost a lot of children due to the budget cuts, funding has been cut in all areas especially for our children," says Anjana Hall, owner of Peace of Mind Quality Child Care Center on Broadway.
United States Senator for New York, Kirstin Gillibrand, had been urging President Obama to put Buffalo, NY on his White House to Main Street Tour. In a press release, Gillibrand said this shows Obama's strong commitment to the region.
It is something I advocated for because I believe Western New York can play a leading role in America’s economic recovery. When President Obama comes next week, he will meet families, workers, businesses and entire communities that stand ready to help lead America’s economic recovery. From a world-class manufacturing tradition to cutting edge businesses and universities, to people who know the true meaning of hard work, Western New York can help lead America’s economic recovery.”
Second Sitting President In Six Years
It's not the first time a president has visited Buffalo. J.F.K., L.B.J., Ford, Carter, and Reagan all made stops in the Queen City, but next week will mark the first time a sitting president has been here since President George W. Bush visited Kleinhans Music Hall six years ago.
The White House to Main Street Tour kicked-off last December when The Obama Administration announced plans to hold the Forum on Jobs and Economic Growth at the White House. Following the forum, the President kicked-off the tour that is taking him across America where he is speaking with workers and sharing ideas for economic recovery.
