Obama Vs McCain - Second Debate Roundup, Transcript and Polls
I was watching the second round of presidential debates between Barack Obama and John McCain last night, this time streaming live over . One of the most talked-about topics was McCain's off-hand reference to Obama as 'that one'.
NowPublic member Integrityforamerica was in a room filled with both McCain and Obama supporters, most of whom didn't agree with that remark:
While watching the debate tonight at a local lounge we where very shocked when Mccain refered to Obama as 'that one'. As I looked around the room full of democrats on one side and republicans on the other it was the same reaction to the comment. One debate watcher who was a Republican said "That wasnt very presidential."
NowPublic member Master Jim has a story that shows the various polls that went out, asking Americans who they thought won the debate. Emerging as a clear winner is Obama, with polls showing him winning the debates with anywhere from 40 per cent to 80 per cent support:
From CNN.com
Who fared better in Tuesday's presidential debate?
Sen. John McCain 13% 5454
Sen. Barack Obama 84% 34740
NowPublic member Alaaron has the transcript for the debates linked in his story:
Gentlemen, we want to get under way immediately, if we can. Since you last met at Ole Miss 12 days ago, the world has changed a great deal, and not for the better. We still don't know where the bottom is at this time.
John Kusumi has posted Ralph Nader's response to the McCain-Obama debate:
The following is the Ralph Nader response to Tuesday (10/7) night's debate between John McCain (R-AZ) and Barack Obama (D-IL).
NP member Djermano asks who *you* thought won the debate:
Who do you think won the 2nd debate? Obama sounded good to me tonight..Although I don't agree with him 100%....such as his support for nuclear power, and some of the same Military views..
BBC has been keeping track of the various facts the leaders were throwing around:
Claim: Barack Obama said: "The oil companies... currently have 68 million acres that they're not using. Either you use them or you lose them."Fact: Mr Obama was probably basing his claim on a June report from the Democratic staff of the House Natural Resources Committee, which cited statistics from the Interior Department's Minerals Revenue Management that classified 67,055,715 acres of oil and gas leases as "non-producing" in 2007.
Claim: John McCain said Mr Obama "has voted 94 times to either increase your taxes or against tax cuts".Fact: The claim comes from a Republican National Committee fact sheet, which counted votes on non-binding budget resolutions, as well as votes that, in the opinion of Politifact.com "would not have resulted in a net tax increase, but instead redistributed the burden among different payers".
From CBS news, 40 per cent of voters thought Obama won the debate:
Forty percent of the 516 uncommitted voters surveyed identified Barack Obama as tonight's winner; 26 percent said John McCain won, while 34 percent saw the debate as a draw.
My previous NowPublic story before the debates took place:
It's one month until the American presidential election and tonight is the second debate between John McCain and Barack Obama.

Rob Walker, I like this story. It's good stuff. The Debate was so bad I fell asleep in the middle, and I am a political junkie!
