Obama Win Fuels Ku Klux Klan Membership

Former Ku Klux Clan member, Johnny Lee Clary, claims the recent presidential win by Barack Obama, as well as the current financial crisis, have increased online registrations for the Ku Klux Klan.
Johnny Lee Clary, a former imperial wizard, the highest-ranked member of the KKK, said the current global financial crisis and political change in the United States were fuelling Klan membership for the first time in decades.
"It's serious, serious enough that the FBI ... and other law enforcement agencies are trying to get on top of it because the klan has made direct threats to Obama," pastor Clary, who now fights against the group as a born-again Christian, said.
At one recent rally in Alabama, more than 300 people signed up, a number he said was "unprecedented".
"They (KKK) actually sent me an email just the other day and were telling me that Barack Obama was the best thing that ever happened to them and they're excited and happy because their membership is growing larger than it ever has," he said.
Clary also claims the white supremacist group is actively recruiting in New Zealand and target poor, isolated youth.
He has told New Zealand media his contacts have informed him that KKK paraphernalia is being distributed in Auckland to recruit young members.
"As far as I know it's happening in Auckland right now," he told Radio New Zealand from his home in Alabama.
"There's a clan leader in Auckland and he is putting out all kinds of literature and paraphernalia."
He warned the organisation was targeting young people from low socio-economic backgrounds.

In my piece, Two Sides of a Coin, which I posted in August 2008, I address that although the majority of news agencies across the nation chose to report that White nationalists/supremacists were welcoming an Obama presidency, with the media reporting that White nationalist/supremacists were hoping for his election to jump start a race war, there were real ominous concerns voiced by the F.B.I.
This link, one of several at the piece mentioned above, voices concerns by the F.B.I. of the recruitment of 'ghost skins' by White nationalist/supremacist groups.
A document outlining this possibility was distributed to law enforcement agencies nationwide in the U.S. in July 2008.
The stated plan for the use of 'ghost skins' was to seek training within the armed forces and return to White nationalist/supremacists to train others of the group in the use and knowledge of weapons, learned during their enlistment.
Those to be recruited as 'ghost skins' were required to be without any possible tatoos that would identify their affinity with White nationalist/supremacist groups.

You're welcome, Rhonda and you're correct.
Most hate groups are not anti-White.
The majority have been traditionally anti-Black, anti-Jewish, anti-Catholic, anti any so called minority, so called non-White immigrant, most recently anti-Arab, anti-Muslim, with very few hate groups existing among those named as targets of the traditional hate groups, with none having numbers found among the majority of traditional hate groups.

As the organization enjoys heavy support among White Southern politicians, heavily represented by politicians in Mississippi, individuals who wield political power and influence, politicians' connections to the CCC is eerily reminiscent of the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission and other commissions, who used the Mississippi commission as their model, that were organized throughout the South, meant to suppress participation of non Whites, at that time, Black people, in the political process.
Their statement of principles indicates a desire to attempt similar motivations and goals.

Yeah, I also thought of Karen's story when I read this... sad but unsurprising.
"Actively recruiting in New Zealand". What, like Saruman*? WTF?!
It would be funny, except that these people are serious, and they're teaching this crap to their kids.
Conversely, kids in school will look at their African-American classmates and draw a direct line to the President, which is surely a good thing: aside from the checkers-game win, it's also a chess move: a (hopefully) long-term gain in race relations, so maybe one day we can finally not have to spend so much time and energy on a subject that should surely be relegated to history.
(*Neither Christopher Lee nor Brad Dourif have any hate-group ties: the video is for humor purposes only. Orcs, on the other hand, hate all humans, and don't really focus on skin color)

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, there are 888 known active hate groups in the United States, quoting from statistics from 2007. Only 4 states out of the 50 do not have active groups within their borders.
Aside from the election of President Obama, hard economic times always encourage these types to move to the forefront, mainly blaming minorities for their financial troubles.

The New Black Panther Party does not have the support of those in political power in the U.S. government.
If their political influence and membership grows, any threat they may pose may reach the level of concern of those politicians that affiliate with the CCC, with the affiliation of some of the politicians spanning over a decade.
As these politicians are members of the Congress, in the Senate and House of Representatives and sitting judges, seated on benches in the United States, enjoying the support of the CCC, at present, the CCC is the most dangerous for being able to spread their influence throughout government.
It is the ability to transform one's alleged racist beliefs into action that gives power to racism.

It's not surprising to see that NY has 26 hate groups.
Just an observation to follow up on Jordan's comment about parents "teaching their children this crap." It's even more disturbing when some of these children grow up and are attending colleges where they're exposed to a diverse student population - and continue to harbor hate and intolerance learned from their parents.
at 06:43 on February 16th, 2009
Right wing columnist Ann Coulter has been in the news recently for defending the Council of Conservative Citizens, a White supremacist group, labeled a hate group by some, whose statement of principles state their non inclusive beliefs, including the belief women and 'homosexuals' should not be in the military and their opposition to 'race mixing'.
Of major concern to the public should be knowing the political representatives in the United States government, who are U.S. representaives, senators and judges, that associate with an organization that states:
We believe the United States is a European country and that Americans are part of the European people. We believe that the United States derives from and is an integral part of European civilization and the European people and that the American people and government should remain European in their composition and character.

Another reason that NowPublic and other sites like it are so important. Shine a brilliant light into every dark corner and expose hatred for all to see!

Rhonda, you're quite right, and it's sad and alarming that these late teens in colleges who are intolerant of anyone different when they ought to welcome the opportunity to learn from the diversity of a college population in any large urban city across this country.
Returning to your piece, it's easier for some in the public to dismiss the KKK as fringe, although as Karen Hatter has pointed out, the FBI is treating these elements as dangerous, and rightly so.

Pythiian1, thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation. I would like to suggest that those who "continue to harbor hate and intolerance learned from their parents" is the result of a system of indoctrination via hidden agenda in the educational system, of which parents are a part. In other words, "The indoctrinated mind is blind."

One of those things I feared would happen. Sad. Good reporting, though.

This is a very important message. Thank you for bringing it to our attention, Rhonda.

While interesting, it is a little known fact that the Klan's numbers have dwindled to around 5,000. As a young man I think it's fun watching all of the old white man's silly ideals pass into obscurity.

Ah yes, I see those White Sheet wearing , cross burning Whackos are still around chanting verbal diarrhea again.,

To me, nothing is more despicable than racism regardless of who the targets or the bigots are. I have no love for Obama but that has nothing to do with his race. I would be the first to stand in line to strike a very hard blow against anyone who would target him based on his race. I don't like him, but I prefer to see him voted out of office (or have him resign for that matter) and would never wish him or anyone in his family any harm whatsoever.
Of course, I wish he would espouse a similar sentiment when it comes to his embracing partial birth abortion. Talk about harming the innocent. My stand against racism holds true for anyone no matter what color, belief, or sexual orientation. Everyone has a right to live their lives without fear. Imagine that, a republican Christian ready to fight to protect a guy like Obama or anyone else who might face a threat based upon their race or belief? It just can't be true can it?

Not surprising but the KKK 's a fringe, far out group, less relevant today than the communist party.

Thanks for the report, pretty sad situation!
at 15:21 on February 1st, 2009
so disgusting. meanwhile here in america despite them and in the rest of the world progress continues.
at 15:48 on February 1st, 2009
Sadly the KKK is still around and their numbers aren't as small as you think. That said. I think this is a great story and I do believe that the people who are signing up and continuing to promote hate and violence are doing nothing but showing their ignorance. They should spend more time trying to make our country a better place instead of teaching hatred of other races. No race is above any other race. We are all created equal.
at 16:13 on February 1st, 2009
All progress involves some backlash.
The KKK was almost dead and is still rather small. Estimates put the number at around 5,000. I would worry more about gangmembers moving into your neighborhood and starting to sell drugs, whether they be white motorcycle gangs or posses from Caribbean islands.
A few years ago, the KKK in an act of desperation changed their longstanding policy of excluding Catholics and Italians. As someone raised Catholic, I had to smile to myself.
I have been around a lot of kids, and my wife is black. We all agree there is less prejudice than ever. Yes, radicals will make threats and "hippy" women tried to kill President Ford a couple of times. But that did not mean that Manson got to take over. There is reason for concern but there will be no race war.
There will be a lot of argument and posturing and demagoguery around programs such as Affirmative Action, however.

Deepest thanks to everyone who read, commented on, and/or recommended this story. A special thanks to those who added additional source links and video to this story.
As I expressed in a comment on a story I published in August 2008, entitled "Supremacist David Duke: Essay on Obama" -- the Ku Klux Klan is an American owned website, on American soil. In other words, recruiting, spreading hate, racism, and bigotry from America, and with the idea that "foreign" law enforcement authorities would not take the time to track them back to America. Perhaps this time around, they will find themselves wrong!

Super post. As the others say here on the post, I think (hope?) that these people are soon going to find themselves in the 'junkmail' of life......
Neil Young wrote it many years ago. And I for one am glad he's right....

Karen, thanks again for the additional information and comment. I think it would be a good idea if readers familiarized themselves with hate groups, at least in their home state, that are available on the Hate Groups Map at the link you provided.
I was shocked when I learned that my home state of New York has 26 Hate Groups, and that not all hate groups are strongly anti-white. Four of these groups are located in the areas surrounding my home city of North Tonawanda (Niagara Falls, Buffalo, and Lockport), and include a Black Separatist Group who. among other things, oppose integration and racial intermarriage. Other groups: Radical Traditionalist Catholic who embrace anti-Semitism, White Nationalist Group that focuses on the alleged inferiority of non-whites, and the Neo-Confederates who believe minorities are destroying the "Anglo-Celtic" (white) culture of the South.

Rhonda: Thanks for bringing this to the attention of the world. It is important that this news receives major coverage. Unfortunatly, the Mainstream Media does not recognize this threat and I remember people in America saying it could not happen.

The South never wanted to take over or usurp the North.
Dixie simply wanted to free itself from Lincolns corrupt ultra taxation and be empowered to run its own affairs. The US was the final bastion of slavery which would have died a natural death within a handful of years. Lincoln was well aware of this and provoked war at Fort Sumpter in a despearate attempt to continue revenue into Northern coffers. Britain and France both recognised this and advocated for the south. The White house promptly threatened trade sanctions which stopped these nations supporting the South during the war.
Lincoln actually won the White House on the slavery platform. His home state of Illinois banned blacks from entering. Slavery was still legal in the North until half way through the war. War criminal General T Sherman stated that if the war was about slavery he would have offered his sword to the other side. He then went about committing genocide of the South intent on killing every white civilian.
The South has never had the benefit of a voice and is instead vilified as a racist and totalitarian society. The Stars and Bars being that symbol. In actual fact most KKK strongholds have been from the North.
The South does not have an angelic past, but neither has it had a free past, forced to live under federal law and bereaved of it's own self determination. Unregonised as it's own culture and own people. But the South does have its own motto: Deo Vindice
God will vindicate.
