Obama's appointment for Ambassador to Canada - David Jacobson
President Obama has appointed David Jacobson as his Ambassador to Canada. Although he still needs to be confirmed by the Senate, there is little doubt that he will be.
Jacobson told a Senate Committe that the Canadian winters will not phase him. He said that he comes from Chicago and as such is used to them.
Jacobson who is 57 will have several issues to deal with. First and foremost the "Buy America" provision in the stimulus package, followed by NAFTA. Smooth trade is also important when it comes to improved and speedier border crossings.
Jacobson, if engaged, has many issues to dive into. His full engagement can contribute greatly to Canada/US relations.
The prospect of an Ottawa winter doesn't faze the man expected to become the next U.S. ambassador to Canada.
Jacobson, 57, served as deputy national finance chairman for the Obama campaign and is currently serving as special assistant to the president. His appointment still needs to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate, which is expected sometime after Labour Day following the August recess.
Jacobson also told reporters on Wednesday that he understands Canadian concerns about the "Buy American" provision in the U.S stimulus package, which gives priority to U.S. iron, steel and other manufactured goods for use in public works and building projects funded with recovery money.
