Labradoodle or Portuguese water hound?

Barack Obama has been working towards taking over his many duties as President of the United States this month, and even with the Economy and the Middle East to worry about his family has narrowed down their choices for a family dog.

There were rumours a few days ago that Obama's family might take more than one dog, in which case I guess there's no need to decide!

I had never even heard of this dog before, but it sure looks striking.

Along with the serious news about the economy, terrorism, the Middle East and other hefty subjects, ABC News' George Stephanopoulos this morning

also got down to the Obama-related "news" that many folks seem most interested in: What kind of dog will the next first family be getting?

Portuguese Water Dogs (PWD) once existed all along Portugal's coast, where they were taught to herd fish into fishermen's nets, to retrieve lost tackle or broken nets, and to act as couriers from ship to ship, or ship to shore. Portuguese Water Dogs rode in bobbing fishing trawlers as they worked their way from the warm Atlantic waters of Portugal to the frigid fishing waters off the coast of Iceland where the fleets caught saltwater codfish to bring home. They NEED to get a porty.. I have a 10 year old porty named Misty… shes the best and most beautiful dog in the world… she looks 100 times better than any porty I've ever seen in a picture(cuter than the dog in the above pic.. which is adorable).. shes completely black except for a milk pan marking(streak of white hair underneath her chin)I haven’t seen a single hair shed from her in this entire time.. and despite what people are saying… they don’t need to be in the water or realy active… my dog actually doesn’t even like the water that much.. and she currently lives in Northern Ontario Canada(I'm in Hollywood right now)… so she doesn’t get walked that much(its freezing).. and she has no problem with that… when I went home for xmas break since Id been watching the dog whisperer.. i tought her how to walk on a treadmill.. not so much as tought… but put her on it.. and she started walking… no problems whatsoever… and tought her much much more...so obviously… very smart…. misty is the most peaceful dog in the world and she loves anyone….. not really loves… but it seems like shes half cat half dog… she doesn’t really give much of a **** about anyone… in other words… she wont bug you ever…. shes the most ‘chill’ dog in the world… my dog was worth over $3000 when we got her.. but her value has appreciated… and shes worth much much more..  if not priceless... I think that the taxpayers should foot the bill in order to get this dog into the whitehouse LOL…When I saw Obama give his acceptance speech and talk about geting a dog… the first thing that came to mind was…. “FoO! You need to get a porty!’. and he will… and he should…

and p.s. to the dude that said portys would be going diluted blah blah blah...  no chance in hell...

Portuguese Water Dogs are incredible.  There is a guy who lives on a yacht in Australia with one named Cutty (I'm guessing after the Cutty Sark).  If you want an insight into what the dogs are like take a look at the log he has on the website www.westsailor.com  there are heaps of photos of Cutty from a Pup until now (about 2 years old).  Cutty does all types of boating stuff like pulling ropes, catching fish and even steering the boat.  Amazing.

Unfortunately whatever dog Obama gets the breed will suffer because it will instantly become a fashion statement.  If it's a Portuguese Water Dog, then the breed will become a diluted, poor quality dog which will be bred by backyard breeders and anyone who trying to make a quick dollar.  Hope for the Portuguese Water Dog breed that it doesn't happen since the breed has managed to be well protected and kept secret for so long.

The correct name of the breed is Portuguese Water Dog.

Bocker the Labradoodle

As spokesdog for labradoodles, we know the Obama's would get a wonderful pup with one of us.  Being a well rounded doodle, model and therapy dog, we are very smart and if breed correctly a good choice for people with allergies.  Portuguese water dogs are also no shed, hypoallergenic dogs, but do have a number of illnesses associated with them and some are prone to cancer. We wish them all the best.

Labradoodle and Portugese Water dog are both adorable and people-friendly - both would make great First Dogs :-)

Both breeds are adorable but, to me, they don't look very allergy friendly for Malia's needs.

Labradoodles are wonderful.  If you buy a second generation one which is a cross between a full sized poodle and a lab, take the female offspring and breed it to a miniature poodle.  You get a dog about 30 pounds, sturdy with curly non allergenic hair.  There are responsible organizations that breed these dogs, many of whom go on to be assistance animals.

Both dogs are hypoallergenic actually.  No problems at all.  Neither breed sheds.

Obama said they were going to get a dog from a shelter. If they did would it be a gift he would have to register and be property of the US government?

And the reason why he said that is because the president of PETA wrote him a letter asking him to do so.

Also I think they would pay for the animal. Most shelters in the U.S. have an adoption fee of some kind to cover spaying and neutering at a minimum. So therefore he'd purchase it.

Interesting dog, like the original Border Collie of the Viking.

I think the Labradoodle is the one to go with. We have a labradoodle here and it's a "clown-like" dog but is quite obediant. There's a place in Newark, OH called Yester Year Acres that has the most beautiful and healthy labradoodles. The pups are very energetic for the first year and require tons of attention; which there's more than enough attention being the White House dog.

Hey, I checked out the westsailor.com and his portuguese water dog Cutty.  That dog is so cute and lives on a yacht!  So cool.  I think that dog is going to be famous one day.  Man I wish I lived on a yacht with my dog.  How did he train his dog to do all that stuff?

would love to see a labradoodle in the oval office.  we have one and they are great pups.  would probably be much easier to find a rescue labradoodle than a rescue portuguese water dog.  labradoodles are very popular right now so sadly that means they are being overbred and have been found in puppy mills and such.  the obama's could really help out a pup in need with a labradoodle...unfortunately, the down side to whatever dog ends up in the white house is people will then copy this without thinking about whether these dogs are best for thier lives....best wishes to them whatever dog they choose...dogs can bring a lot of joy to a family and give comfort to the kids who may want to escape from the crazy life they will be put into.  my labradoodle keeps me laughing, that is for sure, as have all the dogs that have shared my home and life.

Please, it is not a Portuguee water Hound it is a Portuguese Water Dog. I have one that is both black over most of her body but also has a white face and white on all 4 legs. Personally I vote they take both dogs., but the PWD will give them a run for their money. Their girls would love it. But please do not get one from a shelter which I doubt you could find because if you have a pwd you have paid a high price and you do not let them out of sight. The saying goes, Out of  sight in trouble. The are not destructive at all. The best of luckto the obama family.

I disagree. the lab cross in the lab-poodle mix may be allergy problematic as labs do indeed shed and are allergy triggers. As for poodles it is often the dander and not the fur. There are only a few truly allergy neutral dogs and these are the havanese and the yorkshire terrier. With all dogs, wash your hands prior to touching your eyes as, like it or not, the oils in all animal fur and hair (yorkies have hair not fur) will bother your eyes on direct contact just as would your hair when it gets into your own eyes.  I hope they do a lot of reading because they are not yet choosing wisely. Rescue orgs are great but watch for lineage or the family cannot be certain of the animals' allergy trigger value at all.
