Obama's Life Story Made Into An Anti-Abortion Ad By A Catholic...

In a move that is outraging pro-choice groups, a Catholic group has made a television commercial that turns Barack Obama's life story into an anti-abortion ad.
Why doesn't this surprise me? Some Catholics (and I used to be one so I know this) who are anti-abortion will stop at little to make their point. Even if this means taking the personal details of man's life and manipulating them to suit their own needs and ends.
The ad begins by showing a small fetus in a mother's womb as the following words appear:
"This child's future is a broken home."
"He will be abandoned by his father."
"His single mother will struggle to raise him."
"Despite the hardships he will endure this child will become the 1st African-American President."
At the end of the television spot there is a photo of Barack Obama and these words: "Life: Imagine the Potential."
Nice going. Nothing is sacred, it seems. Apart from a bundle of cells measuring a couple of centimetres of course.

While I am Pro-life I am not a fan of this type of work. I would rather have someone ask my opinion and we share our views. This type of thing goes on, on both sides. I also think that protesting outside of abortion clinics yelling, 'Killer' doesn't express the love I was taught to share from the Bible. Thanks for the story

Politisite, right. I agree that dialogue and shared opinions are necessary. But this sort of activity crosses a line for me.

I think I learned a great deal following theological college. I was so excited about my faith that I often was so over bearing I could not be heard. I really think the older I get, I understand is that, there is a God, I am not it, and God will send me folks on his time table. I learned to love the sinner not the sin. Maybe some of that wisdom came from having my daughter Melissa. That's Gods way of sharing with me how difficult a child I was. I wonder sometimes, if it wouldn't have been better if we all exchanged children at birth so our traits would not clash LOL

Politisite, it is really very interesting to read this honest and compassionate account. I appreciate you writing it here.

generaldecay, I think the video is well done and definitely sends a clear and powerful message. Interestingly, I understand the following to be an old African Proverb, "No one knows whose womb bears the king (chief)".

What we say in the south is, Your Momma was Pro-Life!

Rhonda, the use of personal and emotional information about a man's life to make that message is unacceptable to me, regardless of how well done it is.

generaldecay, President Obama is viewed by many as a symbol of what can be achieved in the face of "adversity", but he is only one representation of all that can be achieved if the choice is life instead of legalized murder (which he supports). Too, it is the case that President Obama's "personal" life is, for the most part, public knowledge, and I would answer differently if I believed the use of this particular information was used to harm in some fashion; I just don't see it that way.

I can absolutely see your point, Rhonda. My issue is that a man's private life (however public) is being manipulated to make such a point. Granted, it's a point in disagree with. I would feel the same if it was anyone else - it's not just about Obama. Does that explain it more clearly?
at 07:00 on January 25th, 2009
Yes, it does explain it more clearly. I do agree, it is not just about President Obama and that you have explained it more clearly. Nevertheless, I think we are going to have to agree to disagree:)! Thanks again for a great story!

NO! You will come round to my way of thinking. I will not have you disagreeing with me! ;)

I will think on it and get back:)!

Atta girl! Everyone agree with Alice now! ;)

The inherent flaw in the ad-maker's argument is its converse: substitute Obama's image with that of a famous evil-doer (take your pick), and presto: a pro-abortion ad.
at 10:52 on January 24th, 2009
HA! I see your thinking. That said, pro-abortion adverts aren't very common. ;) (Although I think that it was suggested during Bush's time in office that he was a good advert for abortion.)

I once read a riddle written by someone that said 'if you had the choice between a vegetarian, a non-drinker, and a religious man, and an alcoholic, an adulturer, and by definition a sinner, who would you choose? Naturally most people chose the first man, and that turned out to be Hitler. The second man was a really good American President but I can't remember who it was (I may have gotten some of the descriptions wrong though; this is by memory).
I see this ad to be like that riddle.
It makes a point; I'm just not sure if it's the right one.

Ah, interesting parallel there Amy. Thanks. :)

It certainly takes liberties. Obama's parents, college students, married. Barack Hussein Obama was named after his father. His mother had medical care. He was born in a modern hospital. There were grandparents to fall back on. In fact, Barack Obama went to private schools including one in Hawaii where some wealthy families sent their children. The Bush administration ban on funding to third world women's health programs brought about the deaths of many women and infants who could not get the care they needed. Women accessing family planning programs reduces abortions as well as hunger children when there are too many mouths to feed. We might not understand that as well in this country. But we should try to.

The reason this ad "crosses the line" is because it touches a nerve pro-choice people usually ignore, that every life is valuable, and every life deserves a chance.
The fact that abortion disproportionately eradicates African-Americans is another fact lost on them.
Pro-choice and liberalism in general reeks of arrogance. They seem to think they know who should live or die. They know how to spend your money better than you do. They know what is acceptable to teach your children. They know what is acceptable TV and radio fare.

Brilliant! It simpy states the facts. No invasion of privacy here.

I am repulsed by the excessive excuses of pro-choice advocates who deny the realities of
the important onset of life. The violence of abortion is nothing more than a practice of vicious
people who refuse to accept responsibility for their actions. Adoption is a loving word..
abortion is not. If a living fetus can dream at 4 months, with a viable heartbeat, one would be
a fool to consider this creation as nothing more than a mass of cells. WE have become a very
violent society punctuated by the pernicious practice of abortion. If you want to express love,
work to stop the violence, now.
