NP Rank:
Obama's Pick for Secretary of Education Is Arne Duncan
CNN is reporting that Barack Obama's choice for secretary of education is Arne Duncan, the head of Chicago public schools.
It should be noted here that an assessment of Secretary Candidate Duncan's record in Chicago will be examined by many in the media. This writer's initial review has found that within the last two years that High School 11th Graders reading and writing proficiency skills fall within the lower third percentile in America. In addition, within the 50 largest cities, Chicago rates 17 from the bottom and graduation rates at 52.2%.
In Chicago, only 51 percent of students graduate in four years, and in nearby Joliet only 48 percent graduate in four years. Illinois cities are not alone; nineteen of the top 25 largest cities in America graduate less than 60 percent of their students on time,

Statement from Illinois Education Association President Ken Swanson on the Appointment of Arne Duncan
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Dec 16, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The following is a statement from Illinois Education Association President Ken Swanson: "The appointment of Arne Duncan to lead the Department of Education is an immediate upgrade for an agency that, during the last eight years, has seldom acted in the best interests of school children and education employees. "In May, 2007, Arne Duncan participated in the IEA-organized CARE rally, which brought more than 8,000 people to Springfield to demand school funding reform. That day, Duncan told the crowd that adequate education funding is '...THE civil rights issue of our generation,' then led the throng in the chant, 'Fund our schools! Fund our schools!'

Thanks Poitsite for posting this story. Coming from Chicago, President elect must have seen Arne Duncan's work closely. But interestingly your post mentioned that Duncan shoot hoops together with Mr. Obama. So you think President elect chose him because of his proximity and not work?

Sanjay,
My issue is not nepotism but the statistics for Chicago. They are terrible. After No child Left Behind we are going to get a Guy who has done little to improve Chicago Schools. He has a 52.2% Graduation Rate, 11th graders fall in the lower third percentile in Reading and writing, and out of the top 50 cities in America they are near the bottom. That is my problem with the selection.
So Ask the question, with all the educators, in the Nation, with excellent track records why did he Pick this man?

what I would like to know is how close this guy is to William Ayers and his way of teaching America hate? I tried to investigate the Ariel education initiative, but their webpage would not open.

Debi: I also would like know if Duncan follows the philosophies of William Ayers. Ariel Education Institute was established in 1989 to advance educational opportunities to economically disadvantaged areas. I have also found that the AEI organization's parent company, Ariel Capital Managment, was a large fund raiser for Obama's presidential campaign. Regardless of Duncan being a magna cum laude Harvard Graduate, the Chicago public school system is still one of the WORST in the country. Why didn't Obama pick someone from a school district which is actually working? Oh, I know . . . Chicago's public schools are the model that we should strive for This doesn't say much about Obama's pick for Education Secretary.

Debi- Thank You for your question. I am sure one of our readers will have credible information on Duncan vs Ayers Philosophies.

Debi states "what I would like to know is how close this guy is to William Ayers..."
Are you serious? Is the deepest question you can ask based on a right-wing sound-bite attack? Since the Ayers-Obama connection was soundly debunked, seeking an Ayers-Duncan connection is so foolish that I question the quality of the education you received. If you are a recent student in the Chicago school system, then we have strong reason to question the appointment.
BTW, the Ariel Education Initiative is centered around teaching children capitalism. Not quite what you expected, eh? I guess you'll have to feed your hate on a different appointment.

Politisite, I was blown away by the stats you stated, so I had to check against the Canadian ones, which are 75% (2006) nationwide, down from 77%.
The site you quoted from, fightcrime.org, went on to say "Illinois reports on its state website that 88 percent of its students graduate, whereas an often cited estimate concluded that only 77 percent of its students graduated on time."
I don't think it's fair to judge on a 4 year time limit, you cannot assume that students that don't graduate within 4 years don't graduate at all. A lot of kids take an extra semester or two to catch up, but the main thing to focus on is graduating, period.
I know nothing of Arne Duncan, but I was impressed with his speech today, and only hope he will be a welcome addition from the "outside."
More information on him on the NYTimes website.

Actually, excellent points here.

Duncan is in charge of the Chicago school system not the state school system. I reviewed many statical sites for the article. If the whole state has a graduation rate of 77 percent and Chicago has a grad rate of 52.2% it shows my point. I did take in to account that some children do not graduate on time. In America there is plenty of time to graduate within 4 years. There is quite a bit of study hall time and free time. The rates of Graduation in 5-6 years in Chicago is just a few percentage point higher. Some statistics quoted Grad rates just above 50%, I quoted the highest figure. The bottom line is that Chicago is among the worst school systems in American cities. In fact, out of 50 large cities it is in the bottom 20. I think the actual number is 18 from the bottom.
Fightcrime.com was only one site I looked at for the article. I looked at both state and nation department of education statistics. In 1988 Chicago was the worst in America. Among very Large cities two cites are worse, Las Angles and New York City school systems. No matter how you look at it, Chicago is still among the worst. IN the last 20 years they have only risen to the 3rd worst from the worst.

Those aren't very good statistics..
