Monday evening on Interstate 64 as they showed from the air the police vehicle that belonged to the officer that was shot. It wasn't known if it was a state trooper or a city police officer, the car was unmarked.  It wasn't until this morning that the public found out that it was a city police officer. The officer will be fine per the reports from the hospital. One man lost his life he was on work release. These guys kidnapped him and shot and killed him for reasons not known yet. The suspects are in custody.

NORFOLK - A Chesapeake police officer was shot in the line of duty after a pursuit Monday afternoon.

The officer’s name has not yet been released but 13NEWS has been told he is recovering after undergoing surgery Monday night.

A source told 13NEWS the suspects kidnapped a work release prisoner from Norfolk outside a shipyard in Berkley.

When officers tried to pull the van over, the suspects led police on a chase that ended in Chesapeake when the van crashed on the ramp from US 17 to I-64.

According to police the suspects got out of the van and started shooting. Officers returned fire hitting two of the suspects.

The third ran away and was found in a nearby neighborhood by a Portsmouth K-9 unit.

During the exchange the officer was also hit. The Chesapeake officer was shot at least one time during the gun battle with three armed suspects.

The officer was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General and is said to be recovering.

All the suspects were taken into police custody the suspects killed the individual they had abducted.

They also said that victim was a work release prisoner wearing a GPS device. That is how officers tracked down the suspects which ultimately ended in a shootout that sent one of their own to the hospital.
