OJ Simpson faced sentencing today for his role in a Nevada kidnapping and robbery and was given a of 15 years in prison with no chance for parole for 5 years, but when the consecutive sentences are considered he will not see freedom for at least 9 years.

OJ Simpson's sentence is in keeping with what most experts predicted would happen.  With public opinion leaning toward the maximum, life in prison, experts felt his sentence would most likely be somewhere between 6 and 18 years in a maximum security prison.  Simpson got 15 years, and with several consecutive sentences as well, he could be there for longer.

Track reaction in the blogosphere: watch real-time comments on the OJ Simpson Sentencing Scan.

For many OJ Simpson watchers seeing the disgraced ex-football star thrown behind bars is better late than never.  The question is, will OJ be sentenced on the facts of this crime or in the name of retribution for what many feel was a miscarriage of justice in the murder trial of his ex-wife Nicole Brown-Simpson?

OJ Simpson was sentenced in a Nevada court by presiding Judge Glass to a minimum of 15 years for his various crimes.  His accomplice, Clarence "CJ" Stewart was sentenced to 15 years with no chance for parole until 5 years had been served.  Of the many counts in question both Simpson and Stewart received several concurrent and consecutive sentences.

Judge Jackie Glass has some scathing words for OJ Simpson calling the Las Vegas incident "a very violent event" and calling the evidence in the case against him "overwhelming." Judge Glass commented that OJ Simpson had a clearly sinister motive in seeking to retrieve his property on the day in question. Simpson wanted to make sure that the items did not go to the Goldman family, who he referred to on tape as "the gold diggers."

In her sentencing statement Judge Glass was very clear about her motivations in determining OJ Simpson's sentence.  She noted that Simpson's actions were very serious and "much more than stupidity."  She added that she was not there to sentence OJ Simpson for things that had happened in "his past with the criminal justice system."

It was clear from the beginning that Judge Glass was not a fan of OJ Simpson's.  "I didn't know when the trial started if you were arrogant or ignorant.  Through this proceeding I got the answer... it is both."  She then made it clear that she was not going to bring retribution to OJ Simpson for anything else and was only addressing the case in question.

With his legs shackled in irons and his hands chained to his sides, Simpson, in a dark blue prison jumpsuit, will stand before District Court Judge Jackie Glass as she pronounces his sentence.( ESPNews will carry the hearing live at noon, ET.)

Glass, a jurist with a flair for the melodramatic, is likely to begin with a stern lecture. And she is likely to end with a prison sentence that will keep the 61-year-old Simpson behind bars in Nevada for 18 years and possibly more.

Court probation officials have been investigating Simpson for weeks, preparing a recommendation that will be a critical factor in Judge Glass' decision. In most cases, probation officials are inclined to suggest sentences that are more lenient. But according to recently filed court documents, the probation officers in Simpson's case are suggesting a sentence of 18 years. Even worse, it will be 18 years of actual incarceration before there can be any consideration of parole.

This was a bad moment for O.J. Simpson. He'd just heard the guilty verdict. Friday morning likely holds another bad moment for him.

Even Simpson's lawyers acknowledge that the best possible outcome for Simpson would be six years in the penitentiary before any possibility of parole.

Well they finally got him on something that they could make stick. His celebrity status was all but washed up so he could weasle his way out fo this one. I am glad the justice system finally prevailed. My hats off to the jurors and judge who handed down the sentence.

Simpson should be in prison for life, but for murder.  I don't think he would have been convicted in Las Vegas for what he did if he had not gotten away with murder in California.

Thanks for this report. He is such a controversial and polarizing figure, that the ups and downs and strange string of events surrounding him (since the tragedy of his wife's demise) is of interest to a large variety of people.

Looks like 1995 finally came back on him. If this was any other person it wouldn't even have gone to trial. But, it was OJ and some manny people wanted to see him go down.

He didn't blubber, but he was definitely crumbling...

I'm seeing a minimum of nine years in other sources.  Where did you hear 15?  EDIT: Ooooh, it helps if I read the whole lede.

The numbers have been counted and it looks like OJ Simpson could serve a maximum of 33 years in prison, and a minimum of 9 years before he can actually get parole.  See the member story OJ Simpson sentenced to as much as 33 years for details.

I hope the parents of Nicole and Ron can now breath a little easier.  He got a minimum of 9 years in prison, but their children got DEATH.  Maybe the courts can separate the two, but they (or most of the public) certainly can't.

I think it is important to show that nobody is above the law. He got away once, but now is back to where he actually belongs.

I'm wondering if OJ will see any other prisoners while incarcerated.....or will he have a nice, comfy cell, special food, and all the good stuff befitting the "Juice".  Regardless of how many years he does or does not get, one thing is for sure.....he will burn in hell for eternity.

O. J. Simpson, now 61, will not be eligible for parole until he hits 70.  I suppose this jury concluded that the glove fits.

Thank you for reporting this important news, Tina.

I just hope some karma is left over for his "dream team" of '97, since that seems to be the popular opinion about O.J.'s guilty verdict.

I myself do not believe OJ killed his wife and Ron Goldman.  I do not think he got away with murder. I do think his son did the crime, that people seem not to acknowledge as the real truth. http://www.theoverlookedsuspect.com/...

Seems rather strange to be convicted of robbing and stealing your own stuff from people you know who have it.

I heard on the radio earlier "what kinda fool gone write a book called If I did it this is how I woulda done it".  He deserves it and deserved it even before 15 years ago when he was just a beginning wife beater, now he's an old murderer who'll probably die in jail.  He had no reason to go to that extent trying to keep things from the goldman family, he was too into material things of this world and too violent and angry.  I just don't see how he could actually have any friend come on national TV and stick up for someone after hearing those tapes of him holding up the place in vegas at gunpoint.  That's just sick.  Biggest fall from grace in sports history.

I can see why he wrote the book because he had no money. He certainly knew anything he did or earned money for Goldman literally (his name the Gold-man)  would have his hand in there taking his money, for a crime he was found innocent from doing. What else could he do but write in synch to the travesty his life had become? Better to make money on a book that Goldman got the royalties to anyway in how he got away with doing it. The only angry guy in all this is Goldman, who refuses to acknowledge OJ didn't kill Nichole and Ron. It was Jason.

He was divorced from her, so calling him the wife beater is not accurate.

O.J did the crime so he must do the time. I don't care about his pass until somebody comes forward and say he murder those too victim. I'm start too believe he didn't murder his ex-wife and her lover. Because if he did do it or had a hit man do it for him they would have found the evidence too charge him with the crime. So too me he's not guilty of the crime until they have proven there case too the jury. And the robbery case they did prove they case. So people need too leave the past in the past and move on from there.

It is clear they found him guilty this time, because they couldn't prove he committed  the murder in his first trial.. How does one rob a robber? Clearly they had his stuff.

How the mighty are fallen. What goes round comes round and he should have been nailed to a wall and left to rot. But no doubt he will be a big hero inside.

Regardless of his past, whether he was guilty or not...

This was a just punishment for his behavior.

This man has shown again and again that he has no consideration for the law, and he is a threat to society.

I loved him in Naked gun...too bad he wasn't as cool as the characters he's played.

Yeah right? There is law in the USA? Bush can get away with mass murder on 911, lie about going to war, kill thousands of innocent people in Iraq, authorize acts of torture, bankrupt the United States, and force people into foreclosure on their homes, since they knew this trouble back in the Reagan Years, when he had the most bank closures than any other sitting President. Place 700 billion $ bailout to help his banking buddies, while costing the American people another 2 trillion in military debt from the War, that Obama promised to end while he CHANGES HIS MIND to increase military expansionism into Afghanistan. Just what kind of law do you think America has? There is no law. and hardly the fault of OJ Simpson..

Jawa Lunk

Did you accidentally cut and past this post, or was this supposed to have something to do with the OJ Simpson?

0
djermano

You said he has no consideration for the law. I point out what Law! Followed up with details.

0
Jawa Lunk

? I'm not sure I understand what your point is...The law's I'm referring to that he had no consideration for are plain to see in this case, there really is no need to reiterate all of them, but in a nut shell, you can't bully citizens with thugs and guns and threaten them.

Pretty easy to understand.

0
djermano

They stole his stuff. I would call them the Bully and Thugs, along with Goldman who refuses to admit OJ didn't kill his son. Goldman has strippped OJ of his life, and continues on his journey to destroy and pressure OJ. It can be said Goldman is driving him to committing crime.

Simpson wanted to make sure that the items did not go to the Goldman family, who he referred to on tape as "the gold diggers."

Goldman is the guy who can't accept reality and buys off Judges with OJ's money.

As I said before, this thread isn't about the murder trial, it's about Mr. Simpson having to pay the penalty for being a vigilante.

Looking JUST at the facts from this case, in the U.S. we have what is called a legal system which affords for situations such as robbery and theft for recouping what belongs to you and punishing those who acted in such a manner.

We as a society cannot condone or allow vigilante's who think they are above the law, take matters into their own hands, and "THUG LIFE" their way around.

It is illegal to steal, and Simpson should have reported the theft, and any evidence he had to retrieve his items and press charges against the guilty.

But it is also illegal to thug around, and hold people hostage, threatening them with a gun.

As a Reverend, you should understand that we are commanded in Romans 13:1-7 to obey the laws of the land...and in this land it is illegal to do what Mr. Simpson did.

Or do the scriptures only apply as long as someone doesn't steal your stuff?

0
djermano

You do not see that OJ going to the Police would have had Goldman getting his stuff anyway? And you think I am that ignorant in not knowing that this trial has every connection to the murder trial? You are either duped or fail to see logic. If its illegal to Thug around, how about telling that to Goldman who has made OJ his dog on a leash. I do not obey unjust laws. If laws were actually just they wouldn't have murdered Jesus.... It's OJ stuff so give it to him, and quit the harrassment.
