The iron door by the window opens to a dumbwaiter, which then drops to the kitchen below. This is how food was distributed to the inmates. The ledge between the upper & lower barred windows is the line where a steel floor used to run, separating the upper and lower decks of cells. Whites were held in the lower group and non-whites (mostly African-Americans) were held upstairs.
