A man thought to be Britain's oldest burglar has been sentenced to 28 months in prison - after being caught thieving on his push bike in Cumbria. Richard Blaylock, 77, stole cash, cufflinks and a watch after cycling to a village five miles from his home in Carlisle, a court heard on Tuesday. He pleaded guilty at Carlisle Crown Court to two charges of burglary.

The most common theory of crime and desistance - the age-crime debate - argues that criminals start to commit fewer offences when the opportunities to offend decrease with age. For burglars, opportunities decrease largely because of changes to the individual's agility and physical ability to commit burglaries successfully. But not for Mr Blaycock who was still doing burglaries at age 77. No agility worries there, it seems! Yes, he may have got caught, but you have to admire his nerve!
