As we approach the Great Olympic games of 2008 in China many question have come to once mind, such as ethics, Human rights and Freedom of expression, terrorism and security as well though!

What did not really come to any once mind, at least not in the public at large is the possibility of a pandemic outbreak of unprecedented dimension!

China had this week a couple of cases of a mysterious illness that by its symptoms alone does remind one of the so called Bird Flu or H5N1 Virus.

Chinas and the WHO do not say at this point what it is or could be since no one does know for certain and speculation are always dangerous, especially in the wake of such events as the Olympics and its money machinery!

Some Asian media have reported the possibility of the Bird Flu as well as Terror acts, committed with some Virus, Bacteria or Chemical that would make the People sick and cause death as well!

Others are talking of the mutation of the H5N1 Virus into a more aggressive and easier to transmit organism.

What the WHO and China do want to avoid is a panic reaction based of rumours and fear, especially since so much is at stake here! After all those are the Olympic Games!

On the other hand neither China nor the WHO want to miss any thing that could or would put people at risk and cause a pandemic of Bird Flu around the World.

Many are coming from all over the World to the Games in China and will leave as well again soon after those games. They would be the ideal and fastest carrier of a deadly virus around the World, that could and would spread at a speed never ever seen before in Human History and cause millions of casualties around the World!

The Olympics are one of those Ideal occasions for such pandemic to take place and may very well do so in the near future as well! Maybe not in China though and maybe not this time around either. Yet, on the other hand, maybe this is the time for it to spread out around the world! Makes you wonder if those Viruses are not smart after all!

The difficult part here is to avoid an unfunded panic and still protect all Humans around the Globe should it be another H5N1 or even worth yet, a mutation of the H5N1!

Paschen, I like this story. It's good stuff.  Very good information.  We need to examine the potential for an outbreak, but not disrupt the games if none exsists.  Nice work

Yes, I agree with your comment here PlanMyGreen, why I tried to balance without causing a panic or adding to it! It is News, yet it is potentially devastating news, since for lack of evidence it could be any thing at this point! Thanks, for the Flag and comment her. Much Appreciated!

Paschen, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Have you ever read Randy Shilts book "And The Band Played on," a historical tracking of the AIDS epidemic? It opens at the American Bicentennial celebration where, Shilts believes, the AIDS virus was first widely spread in America. Seemed like an interesting parallel here.

Thanks for the comment and Flag here Mikasi, I appreciate it! I have read that book and he does make some rather interesting assumptions , it is a good book in deed!

The H5N1 has a far greater and deadlier potential then HIV does though! Why the World Health Organisation is always on High alert when ever a case of H5N1 or even just an suspected case shows up any where around the World!

Bird flu is an old news in world why  Paschen emphasizes china so much ?About the human rights and other affairs i 'd like to get author to konw china is just a developing country ,Its' situation cann't be compared with Japan, just my opinion.

Well, the news is the news and reports have come out that people have died and got ill recently, meaning this week in China of a mysterious illness whose symptoms are similar or identical to the H5N1, why I wrote about it and stayed very cautious not to spread any panic or false information since there are no confirmation nor any dementing of the causes to those people inflicted! The Article is very clear about that! H5N1 is been in the news for over 15 years now and will be still in the news for as long as we keep having outbreaks and mutations that kill people and pause a serious danger for a Pandemic as the one in 1918!

Thanks for the read and comment, I do appreciate the input here!

Do you have a source for this Rene?  I would like to hear more of these threats.  I haven't really heard much on this, but then again, I have been lax in reading Olympic coverage lately besides environment news.  Thanks

I think, what René does mean here may be the resend threats that Al-Quaida made and or the announcement of the Chinese Government that it did contain and avoided a planed Terror attack on the opening ceremony. If my memory does serve me right! Yet René should anther that question her self! You can always send her a message!

Paschen, I like this story. It's good stuff.

I haven't found many references to the H5N1 other than a reference in the Toronto Star today that says two dead birds were found near the equestrian site last week.

Yes, only few have made the connection, and the Government does worry about a panic reaction why the lied is being kept on tight! Thanks for the Comment and Flag here kferaday, I do appreciate it very much!

Paschen, I like this story. It's good stuff.  It's not been that long since Canada had to deal with a SARS outbreak that was truly horrific.  It was traced to a sick airline passenger from Asia.  We need to be alert to the threat of a flu pandemic and suppressing real news, not rumours, won't help in defending the world from the influenza virus.

Thank you Barbara McPhersone for your comment and Flag here, I do appreciate it!

I was in Canada at the time my self, I always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time though! :) Yes in Toronto it was rather a big issue at the time, and no one knew for sire how serious or how fast this would and could spread! It did hurt the City more in the aftermath of SARS though due to a public scare that affected Toronto economically!

There are two worries here the danger and potencial for a Pandemic and the economic concequencess of a public panic reaction to some thing that may be well contained!

A very interesting piece - I actually hadn't thought about this aspect of the games before.

Thank you amyjudd for your comment here and the Flag as well, I do appreciate it very much! Well, the potential is there, cases of the H5N1 keep on coming up through out Asia and Eastern Europe and the latest rumours may bear some trues to them!

Not to forget is the fact we will be in August soon and August till November is usually the high season for such outbreak to take place! Why the WHO and the Chinese Government are most likely doing every thing they possibly can to prevent any such outbreak! It would have devastating Humanitarian and economic consequences should it ever happen any where! Thanks for your comment here!
