As the Olympic torch made its way along the Great Wall of China, on its final leg, it was blanketed in smog as pollution in Beijing rose again.

The torch was paraded along 40  miles of the world famous tourist attraction, flanked on all sides by people dressed in red and yellow.

The massive crowds lining the battlements were unable to see much more than a few hundred yards as Chinese athletes carried the torch on the wall, the key symbol of the country.

In Beijing, pollution was nine times the levels in London. The main Olympics venues were shrouded in the smog, which is at the centre of increasing concern for athletes.

Chinese officials had hoped clear skies over the past two days were a sign the smog was lifting, but today's levels were the worst of the week so far.

The torch itself can dimly be seen through the haze as it is carried by the runners, wearing white

Pollution levels were recorded at 468 micrograms per cubic metre of air, compared to a reading in London's most polluted sites of 52 micrograms per cubic metre.

Olympic officials are examining the possibility of switching events if the smog is considered a danger to the athletes, particularly the two marathon events.

The number of cars on the streets of the Chinese capital has been cut and factories ordered to stop releasing smoke into the air.

However, the air pollution in Beijing has been declared safe today and is no danger to athletes, although if levels did raise again, some events might have to be moved.
What could have affected the torch relay on the Great Wall, could have been merely fog, and not pollution in the air.

amyjudd, I like this story. It's good stuff.

I think it is Fog rather then Smog, when it comes to the great wall of China!

Toronto and Detroit had Smog alarm this Year and rather many of them even in the Winter Month wish is rather unusual!
