The thing is, there are many scriptures in Hinduism. No one book can claim authority. It differs from region to regions, person to person as to what is their interpretation. And almost every book says something contradictory to others.
Take it from a young Hindu, there is one God but many ways of realizing Him/Her. Everyone is free choose to his or her own path...at the end we are all going to meet again.

A question from a novice regarding knowledge about your religion; what book is oldest and should that one be the one most relied upon ?

If you are asking which book in Hinduism is the oldest and to be relied upon, you will again get many answers. As I said, there is so much diversity (and event contradictions) in opinions regarding God in Hinduism, that one might be tempted to say it looks like chaos.
But I believe that there is a harmony in these chaos. Somewhere deep down, all speak about the same basic human values to be followed. The book that should be the most relied upon is one which speaks of them clearly :)
And anyways, you needn't be a novice on Hinduism. Sources likes BBC's article on Hinduism are good places to start.

This is very interesting Sputnic, to often religions forget their ancient scriptures in favour of adopting more modern and more socially acceptable practices which is a shame. You can see the similarities in modern day Christianity, especially the worshiping of Prophet Jesus which goes against one of the commandments in the Bible.

My view on Hinduism ? To you your religion to me mine. It is good to talk about the finer points. Debate is a good way to learn
