Ahmad Faraz is considered as one of the greatest modern Urdu poets of the present times. Born as Syed Ahmad Shah in 1934, he breathed his last at a hospital in Islamabad, Pakistan, last night (Monday, August 25, 2008).Earlier, he was being treated for kidney failure in a Chicago hospital. Ahmad Faraz has a tremendous following. His poetry is understood by common people as well. A revolutionary poet of wit, depth and grit alike, he was in exile during the martial law rule of General Zia-ul-Haq. Like Faiz Ahmad Faiz, some of his best poems are from those days. He wrote 13 books which were published as "Shehr e Sukhn aarasta hai".

"If now these feelings we cover, perhaps in dreams shall we meet
As dried flowers are chanced upon pressed softly in books" --
Those lines are one of my favourites from him. :)

thank you milieunet, rachel, tiha and paschen. it is a huge loss indeed. for those who may understand the urdu language, here is a couplet by faraz which is quite suited to our present circumstances:
rahazan ho to haazir hai mataa-e-dil-o-jaa.n bhi
rahabar ho to manzil kaa pataa kyuu.n nahii.n dete
if you are a bandit then here take away all that belongs to my heart and soul
if you are a leader then why dont you direct us to the goal of our ambition
(the charm of his words is lost in translation though!)
