NP Rank:
One reason Rangel should resign: 80 years old
Professional politicians who camp out in government and keep the meter running as long as they can are much like professional welfare recipients who can’t ever find a job.
Consider the pros and cons of Charles Rangel
Pros
1. He was one hell of a decorated warrior with a purple heart and bronze star in the Korean War
2. He was a leading civil rights activist
3. He was a lawyer with a private practice who parlayed into New York State politics and on into the House of Representatives
Cons
1. He has a history of ethical and tax violations
2. He is a career politician, camped out on the government payroll well past retirement age
3. He has a senior position in government on the Ways and Means Committee for which he may not be best qualified
“Rep. Charles Rangel: Should he resign?
A House ethics subcommittee announced Thursday that it found that Rep. Charles B. Rangel violated congressional ethics rules and that it will prepare for a trial, probably beginning in September. The panel is expected to make the details of his alleged violations public next Thursday.”

Representative Rangel stayed too long in office and is too old. Are there no bright young candidates from Harlem, successful business people who would like a two term stint in the House before retiring?
