Online Petition Targets Nobel Peace Prize Committee
An online petition sponsored by nobelpeace.eu targets The Nobel Peace Prize committee (The Norwegian Nobel Committee) objecting against the committee's choice of President Barack Hussein Obama as this year's recipient of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize award.
That was fast. An online petition targeted at the Nobel Peace Prize Committee has already sprung up bashing their decision to award the honor to President Barack Obama.
“Lets express our objection against the absurd decision to award B. Obama Nobel Peace Prize. His activity had not yet abounded the unusual achievements. And although it can not be denied his potential, a decision the Nobel Committee is definitely premature, and in addition the political,” the petition states, “Unfortunately, such a choice Stockholm committee is directed at existing laureates this prestigious Prize, who have spent years devoted themselves to working hard and consistently for their ideals.”
Based on the original signers, the petition appears to have started in Poland. Although the outrage may be premature–there are just seven signatures so far. They are seeking one million.
Author's Note: Update: 10 October 2009 at 4:34 PM EST: 1,056 signatures.

Amazing your choice of winner...There are thousands of other worthy candidates your committee has overlooked for this award...and they chose President Obama - who has done nothing to deserve the honor. Seems to me like you all are purposely degrading your own organization into a world joke.
at 13:31 on October 9th, 2009
There seems to be many who share your sentiments, Nikki. Thank you for reading and commenting.

How sad--the honor belongs to the USA and its president's contribution to changing its reputation from war-mongering into one seeking peace and reconciliation.

jakesylvester1, unfortunately it appears there are many who do not seem to agree with you. Thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation!
at 14:15 on October 9th, 2009
Their petition is not going to do anything; I wouldn't sign it, I want to give him the chance to live up to the honour first. I mean, it's not even the end of the day!

Lets give Academy Awards to actors who have great potential for a movie roll....
I will giive the President some credit here, He really appeared humbled and said he hoped to fulfill what the prize stands for.
at 14:42 on October 9th, 2009
There have been many times in the history of the Academy Awards when an actor has received an award because it was 'their time' or they have been nominated so many times before that they really deserve it now, even though the movie they were nominated for wasn't perhaps their best work.
To me, this is the same thing if you're going to compare the Nobel Peace Prize to the Academy Awards, which I don't personally.

How right you are --".. it's not even the end of the day!" Thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation, Amy!

Ah but you are wrong. The prize is for people WHO HAVE DONE SOMETHING. Not for what you think people will do. Obama has not lived up to the prize therefore he should never have been awarded for it. If he was going to be given the prize, then he should have done something first.
at 14:29 on October 9th, 2009
The Nobel Committee isn't really known for responding to petitions...
at 14:40 on October 9th, 2009
Thanks for this story. I tend to agree with the others.. The Nobel committee will not withdraw a prize because of petitions. Thanks for your reporting.
at 14:42 on October 9th, 2009
You are very welcome, politisite! I wouldn't think they would withdraw a prize because of petitions, but they should definitely realize the "heat is on":) Thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation!

The Academy Awards are recognizably political. The best don't get awards until way too late.
In this case, the award is way too soon, just as the Academy does when they give the award to someone they are all excited about whose performance is not on a par with the actors, etc, who really deserve it.
Then the Academy ends up giving Paul Newman an Oscar for "The Color of Money" when he should have gotten the Oscar six other times.
Understand that he didn't get the Oscar because of resentment of his talent. And the same thing is going on now.
All the other would-be "Jesus Christs", that is, people out there trying to save the world, are actually doing more in their Savior role than Obama is. Those who really deserve the honor, Gandhi, for example, only remind armchair idealists of their own failings.
But, the Nobel committee crowned him because they couldn't resist. Obama's attitudes, demeanor, approach, emobodies everything wrong and right with the European left, especially the part where they mouth ideals and then don't follow through.
They have really crowned a version of themselves. This crowning was European narcissism in motion.
The European left talked so much pure horse-merde about the war in Yugoslavia and did nothing, the preferred response of peaceniks who can't fight for anything. Now they hope that Obama will be able to talk the US and the rest of the world into peace. Yeah!
Notice that Obama has already asked for help with the military burden. Europe gave him the cold shoulder.

Yeah, well like who didn't like see that "I'd like to teach the World to sing" fluffy Tofu banana cream pie comin! If online petitions determined winner, then that would be another horse and pony show Reality TV, mark my words if he was not President of the USA, everyone in the Nobel Committee internet petition would be going Obama Who?
Obama is articulate, intelligent and a good president so far, but as for accomplishments? Wait four years then call back the Nobel committee and see if one is still deserving!
These online petitions are so much Lefty Gobbling Slurp and gulping, and I agree with the rest of you Online Petitions rarely get any mention, otherwise Internet Porn Actress would be flooded with Nobel Piece Prizes.
Oh yeah, I know how to spell peace!

The Nobel Committee does not care about such nonsense and since it's a private organisation with private funds why should they listen to anyone? The Nobel Peace Award belongs to the Nobel Foundation and they are free to decide who they give their awards to!
at 17:12 on October 9th, 2009
J2B, thank you for reading and commenting. The Nobel Committee may not care 'about such nonsense', but they are obligated to award The Nobel Peace Prize according to the wishes of Alfred Nobel as expressed in his Last Will & Testament.

and I'm sure they hand it out according to the rules, they wouldn't want to lose their jobs, would they?
at 17:15 on October 9th, 2009
Yes, they are free, but their status and respect flow directly from the coherence of their purported ideas and ideals and with their conversion into action.
The status of the Nobel Peace Prize, the esteem in which the world holds it, already a low point of the awards, along with the literature prize, another highly political selection, is now at an all time low.
As it ceases to have meaning, we, the public, will cease to regard it with any feeling, and will have indifference, or even disgust.
I was in Italy when the Nobel Prize in Literature went to Fo. No well known writer deserved it less. Even the Italians thought so.
This type of thing explains the decline of the West in general and Europe in particular.

I think the low point came when they started handing it out to ex-terrorists'
at 17:34 on October 9th, 2009
Thanks for this Rhonda. I can see where they're coming from. This nomination was made after Obama had 10 days in office. He has the challenge now to back up his words with action. Time will tell.
at 18:45 on October 9th, 2009
You are very welcome, albertacowpoke. Yes, I can see where they are coming from too. Ten (10) days does not a "preceding year" make, nor does "accomplishments" pursuant to the Last Will & Testament of Alfred Noble (visit the link I provided in my comment response to JB2). And, as I stated on another post, I don't think it's about any perceived 'star power', politics is probably the name of this game. Time always does:)!
at 19:36 on October 9th, 2009
It's strange to say the least!
at 20:14 on October 9th, 2009
It was a very clever thing to do to give Obama a peace reward and he already knows what it really means he has actually been offered a challenge by Nobel. That of living up to the fine words spoken concerning rid the world of nuclear arms.
Alfred Nobel the inventor of Dynomite the founder of the Nobel Prizes is certainly not rolling in his grave about Obama peace prize he I am sure would be pleased at the crafty judges that issued a prize with a challenge attached to the most powerful man on the planet.
at 20:19 on October 9th, 2009
The question is, what if Obama fails to meet the challenge? He is anyway not accountable to Nobel committee, right?
Maybe this is fine as the committee's responsibility ends the moment they give away the prize.

at 20:26 on October 9th, 2009
More like: what happens when he fails to meet the challenge, as we see him doing?
Nukes are not the problem. Tens of millions died in WWII from conventional arms. Millions and millions have been killed since WWII and not from nukes.
Nukes essentially prevented WWIII from happening between US/Nato and the Soviet Union.
Peace tables only become peace tables when all participants recognize the basic human rights of our neighbors.
I don't see that with the Iranian regime, which does not even respect its own people.

The Nobel Cracker Jack Peace Prize proves that we have no democracy in the world. They leave it up to a committee of biased members who do the bidding of billions of people in the world. It goes to prove how inept the Nobel Peace Prize really is. ..
What challenge is there to say hey....Robert Gates you are fired, and take your Generals from McCrystal to Betrayus with you?. Then you say American troops will be coming home. Afghanistan will be closed, except for humanitarian aid...and business development. No more troops in Europe, and no more troops in Asia.....including Japan. It means withdrawing from S. Korea....and ending that nightmare. It means Israel you are on your own. No more US aid to the Middle East...and we are out of Iraq. America wishes the best to everyone in hand held cooperation, and to do our best to promote this type of leadership in the world.
We do not fear other countries bombing us....because we are Americans, We do not fear terrorists killing us...because we are American....We are not about conquering you, we are about being friends with you. We are the American spirit that can not be destroyed by bombs and bullets. We are about helping you to solve problems, without the use of military force, and armies. We will cut back the US military spending my 75%....and use the money to benefit the people....instead of using it to make people fear us.
This is what I would do if I was President. I think I am...a very good man who knows what is right to do...and not afraid to tell it. I no longer have hope in the US system or any system that promotes the sorry sad bullshit they have always panned out to us...and we get nowhere except into more terror and wars......
Obama is nothing more than the same old same ole sorry sad bullshit..they have always panned out to us.....
Create jobs for the people in America and the world.....forget the military....All they are is a bunch of Welfare free loaders calling themselves soldiers, and defenders of freedom. They are nothing but fear mongers, and extortionists..

Listen up! Obama won the Nobel. It was unanamious and done with ease says the chairperson of the Nobel Committee. So get over it. Consider it a great honor for America and an endorsement of Obama as a global leader with a vision for peace. Your online petition sucks and only represents your vile hatred for Obama and your disrespect for America's role in the world today. Congratulations and a big shout-out for Obama.

I see you convinced a lot of people with your shove in down our throats and up our arses comment Kathy. It is this type of fraud that is not a great honor but a mockery of the Award and the vile contempt you people twist things to your own fraudulent selves. The only congratulations I give is to people who earn it. I suppose we give degrees to people without earning them in College or the University? Oh .....we gave it to him, because we have great hope for him.... Hope wears out...when you don't act on the promises given to get you to be President. So far Obama has proven he is hopeless.

There is no prerequisite that a Nobel Peace prize recipient must be a president of a country so Obama's time in office isn't relevant. Indeed, most of the recipients are not presidents of any country. He's been a voice publicly calling for diplomacy and peaceful resolution of conflict since he began his campaign for president more than two years ago. The award is not for being president, it is for advocating for the use of diplomatic means to settle disputes and for advocacy on behalf of engendering peaceful interactions among nations. All past members have not necessarily been succesful at accomplishing their goals; many have failed. President Woodrow Wilson received the Nobel Peace prize for his efforts to start the League of Nations which ended up being a dismal failure, primarily due to the United States refusal to be bound by the tenets of the League. The current United Nations evolved out of the ash heap of residual ideals left from Wilson's efforts.
I'm not interested in debating whether you share my belief that Obama does deserve the honor bestowed upon him. I know that you can't change my mind and I doubt that I can change anyone's mind who doesn't agree with me. However, I do think that the discussion needs to be framed in relevant facts.
In additon, the Nobel Peace prize has never been awarded based on world consensus. The nominees do not nominate themselves and they don't campaign to win. The nominees are not even made aware of their nomination until the winner is announced. President Obama did not seek this honor. I've read comments on other sites where people have taken him to task for not refusing to accept the award. What an insult to the selection committee and the entire process for him to do so! He respectfully and with humility thanked the committee. To do otherwise would contradict all precedent.
Finally, if we examine past recipients, this isn't a new thing to select a winner based on that person's philophical ideology, a person who has not brought about peace or brokered a treaty. Desmond Tutu and Mother Theresa come to mind. Tutu was recognized for his message of reconciliation in South Africa. He has never ruled a country or held a political office. Mother Theresa was recognized for her leadership and self-sacrifice in ministering to the needs of those living in poverty. Again, she was not a ruler or elected to public office. I don't note this to disparage the selection of Tutu or Mother Theresa. To the contrary, I believe that both of were deservering based on their commitment to offering a consistent message regarding our obligations to humankind, especially those who have the least of any of us.
