Pakistan participated for the first time in the recently concluded Winter Olympics in Canada but only 30 per cent of its citizens knew about their country's participation in the games.

ISLAMABAD: Although not many people (30 per cent) were aware of Pakistan’s first ever appearance in International Winter Olympics held in Canada a few weeks ago, a vast majority (76 per cent) claimed they feel proud when the country participates in such international sports events, 20 per cent did not feel very proud while only four per cent said they do not at all feel proud or gave no response.According to a Gilani Research Foundation survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were asked: “Recently winter Olympics were held in Vancouver, Canada. Have you had a chance to watch these games or have heard about them?”
In the survey, 30 per cent of respondents said they have either watched or heard about the Winter Olympics whereas 70 per cent were unaware.
In a follow up question, the respondents were asked: “For the first time Pakistan participated in the Winter Olympics which were held in Canada. To what extent do you feel proud about Pakistan participating in such international sports events?”
Thirty-five per cent of respondents said they feel extremely proud, 41 per cent said they feel somewhat proud while 20 per cent said they do not feel too proud. The remaining four per cent of the respondents claimed not to be proud at all or gave no response.
The findings of the survey revealed no significant difference in opinion across various demographics.
The study was released by Gilani Foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The survey was carried out among a sample of 2,742 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country this month. Error margin is estimated to be approximately +2-3 per cent at 95 per cent confidence level.
