Now I am not one who thinks we need more "unesseScary laws", but perhaps this is a law which needs implementing thanks to Modern Technology, meant to make life easier, but in some cases may take our life.

Imagine if you will a Brain Surgeon is performing delicate life saving brain surgery on your Noggin.  How would you feel if you enter the operating room and when you wake up and see a cupholder with a hot beverage by your operating table, a DVD player on your chest playing an action movie on a screen above your head, while a stereo is blaring in the background, as the Brain Surgeon is taking a cell phone call from his wife. Somehow I think that would freak you out, wondering why he is not concentrating on the issue at hand YOU!

The same applies to driving your car, ya gotta pay attention to the issue at hand, you and the road!

A Now Public Contributor came up with an excellent analogy, "Never treat your car as a loaded gun, because the Victim could be you!"

We have all seen it, Drivers driven to distraction, whether applying makeup, balancing a hot coffee in the past.

With the advent of cell phones. In the late 1980's and early 90's , we all saw drivers, almost gladly in a "keep up with the Jones" immediately pick up their "behemoth cell phone" at a traffic stop to impress the babe in the next car, pretending to carry on a conversation.

Now that everyone has a cell phone, and cell phones being smaller than ever and with text messaging, many are texting while driven to distraction trying to distinguish those microscopic alpha numeric buttons on the phone.

Cars today rival James Bond Spy Cars, with every conceivable gadget available to distract you.

Cars today, have GPS display screens, as well as drop down TV screens, not to mention  LCD screens for your  stereo which allow one touch menus, not to mention outlets to plug in your Blackberry and laptop computers.

It makes one wonder if you're driving a Car or an Entertainment Unit?   People need to make that distinction , or more Government Laws will do it for us!

Drivers need to concentrate on the issue at hand, you, others around you, and the road!

Premier Dalton McGuinty says he's considering new road safety legislation because modern electronic gadgetry is driving motorists to distraction.

Senior police officers told the premier at a recent meeting that a simple cellphone ban doesn't go far enough to ensure that drivers keep their eyes on the road.

But following a recent spate of fatal accidents in which drivers were suspected of being on the phone, McGuinty said yesterday he is open to a ban on cellphones and any other electronic device that can serve to take a driver's eyes off the road.

"What about people who are tapping on the GPS system, what about people who have road maps out on the steering wheel while they're driving, what about the next gadget . . . that they haven't invented yet which will not be taken into account by your cell phone law," McGuinty quoted the officers.

Barry Artiste, I couldn't agree more. Drivers absolutely need to concentrate on the task in hand - and not fiddling with their mobile phone, GPS, cup of coffee, shaver, etc

Thanks Rachel, many times I have even witness drivers eating their cup of noodles with both hands, I guess that is why God gave us Knees instead of more logic.  Ohhh I forgot the Shaver, thanks for including it.

Barry Artiste, I like this story. It's good stuff.

This is a tough one.  I see many people (some I am sure who bought their drivers licenses) who should not be driving even undistracted.  I see people turning right from the left-hand lane; turning without signalling; even driving the wrong way up a one-way street (this happened right downtown vancouver on Nelson St. during midday).  These people are far worse than anyone talking on the phone in my opinion.  But I digress.

I think the issue is that different people have differing abilities to multi-task while driving.  For some even having a conversation is dangerous while others operate fine behind the wheel while talking on the phone or fiddling with the stereo.  I think it should be similar to impared driving as opposed to blowing over 0.08.  Why not simply add another fine to the exesting violation of Undue Care and Attention when these distracted drivers veer out of their lane or change lanes without signalling etc. while doing anythiug that is deemed non-essential to driving a motor vehicle.  That way you are punishing those who are a risk without catching those that are safely operating their cars.  Just an idea.

Thanks for the Major GS everyone, yes Drivers driven to distraction is a serious issue and as  East Van stated that it seems many on the road must have bought their licenses is more true than many realise. Not to mention those who come on visas, they are allowed to use their country of origin license, but after 6 months, they are to get a BC license, but many do not as language difficulties prevent them or they know they would fail the ROAD RULES BIG TIME !!!   That puts our lives in danger, I am sure many of you have heard of Richmond driving schools scamming and bribing officials in order to get their clients their licence, clients paying these Driving schools upwards to $5,000 a pop, pretty lucrative.  Anyways not to get off topic,  cars now have every conceivable device, toys for big boys, which can render one dead, as many stories we have heard in the lower mainland on traffic deaths, I am sure are due to not just speeding but distraction.

Anyways thanks everyone for your comments.

As for the photos, nope, I got em off the web
