An Open Letter To Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY28)
Dear Ms. Slaughter,
I don't live in your district but I used to. I have met you on a couple of different occasions and frankly I always left those meetings felt like someone had just talked to me, not with me. I sometimes felt like when I talked to you, you just didn't hear me. You may have listened, but you didn't hear me. I couldn't put my finger on it but you just never seemed like you were sincere. You seemed like you had your agenda and anyone that had anything else to say just didn't matter.
Well today you proved my suspicions when you told Ron Reagan that you weren't going to hold town hall meetings because you just don't want to give people like me "a forum". You added insult to that injury by saying you were taking that action (or inaction) to protect the "dignity" of yourself and your office.
Again, I don't live in your district Madam Representative, but I am, nonetheless, deeply offended by our attitude towards many of your constituents. You made the comment that we show up with loaded guns. That is an unfair generalization. I have been to several town hall meetings and I haven't seen any guns. You say all we do is yell and scream. We may be passionate, but I haven't heard any yelling and screaming unless we are rudely interrupted in which case a shout down is appropriate and necessary.
Madam Representative your attitude in indicative of many of your colleagues as well. You mistake our frustration for ignorance. You mistake our opposition for misinformation and our grassroots efforts for astroturfing. I notice you have attended several PRO Obamacare rallies where the crowd was stacked with your supporters yet you won't face a crowd of those that want to offer you a different viewpoint and tell you we disagree with you. There is a word for that. Cowardice.
I can only hope that the residents of your district will see your arrogance and contempt and replace you with someone who knows who they work for. You see, that's the problem, you don't seem to realize that you work for us. Imagine what would happen to any of us if we refused to give our boss a "forum" because we know it's not going to be pleasant? We would be fired immediately. Hopefully on November 2, 2010, your employers will fire you.
In the interest of full disclosure and honesty, I need to tell you that I have 534 other people on my list that you work with that I would like to see fired as well.
Washington needs an enema, it's time we administered it.
