NP Rank:
Is open society unacceptable to radical Muslims?
"Sweden is an open society,” said Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.
That is what radical Muslims are against, freedom? They want to impose their laws and their faith-based values on everyone else. That is what jihad is about. Radical Muslims declared war on the world and people must awaken to this fact and deal with it.
The best hope, IMO, is to have moderate Muslims mitigate and purge their ranks of the menace from within that defiles the name of Allah, if indeed it does. The burden is upon members of the Muslim faith to demonstrate that they can live peacefully and harmoniously with the rest of the community. The same goes for any other religion.
Nations such as Sweden and the United States that accommodate the existence of diverse ideas should not be the enemy. But, if they are defined as such by radical Muslims, the correct response is to oppose it, vigorously.
“Swedish Police Label Stockholm Blasts as Terrorism
Blasts in Sweden Kill 1, Wound 2
Sweden's prime minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt, has described two explosions that shook Stockholm's central shopping district on Saturday as "unacceptable" because, in his words "Sweden is an open society."
Swedish police are treating the blasts, which left the suspected bomber dead and two other people slightly wounded, as an act of terrorism.
Police spokesman Anders Thornberg told reporters Sunday he is not ready to describe this as a suicide attack but in his words, "If this was a suicide bomber, it would be new to Sweden."
Thornberg said the explosions have not resulted in a change to the country's already elevated security level.
Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt called Saturday's blasts as "a most worrying attempt at a terrorist attack."
Police say the first explosion in a car near a busy shopping street was followed by a second blast a few hundred meters away that killed the man.
Shortly before the blasts, the Swedish news agency received an e-mail in Arabic and Swedish, warning of unspecified "action."
The e-mail referred to Sweden's involvement in the war in Afghanistan, where it has some 500 soldiers, and to a 2007 cartoon by the Swedish artist Lars Vilks that depicted the Prophet Muhammad as a dog.”
