Operation Chihuahua Airlift: Homeless Dogs Find East Coast Homes

The number of abandoned Chihuahua dogs in California has reached what is considered to be a breaking point and as a result, Chihuahuas are being airlifted to other parts of the country where they will get new homes. Chihuahuas currently make up 40% of the abandoned dogs in California based animal shelters. Due to the increasing numbers of abandoned Chihuahuas, they have already started being airlifted via Virgin America over to the East Coast as part of a rescue mission to find them new homes.

The process of moving these homeless and abandoned Chihuahuas has been dubbed Operation Chihuahua Airlift. The City of San Francisco Animal Care and Control has set up the airlifting rescue process with mission such as Flight VX022 from San Francisco to New York. The flight transported many Chihuahuas, accompanied by personal aides as well as a doctor. The overall operation is aimed at re-establishing some kind of balance in the number of abandoned Chihuahuas in terms of where they are located across the country. While the California area may be distressed with too many Chihuahuas in shelters, the East Coast has many prospective owners who can give these Chihuahuas new homes.

Facing a glut of abandoned Chihuahuas — the breed now makes up 40 percent of the dogs in California shelters — animal welfare adovates have begun airlifting the diminutive, goggle-eyed orphans to adoptive owners on the East Coast.

The escalating numbers of abandoned Chihuahuas is being dubbed by some as the "Paris Hilton Syndrome." This essentially involves the trend of buying a Chihuahua to carry around like an accessory. These animals have unfortunately become a fashion fad for many people, especially in the California area where celebrity abounds. After the reality of the time and effort involved in animal care sets in for the owners, however, many of these Chihuahua dogs are left at shelters or simply abandoned.

Shelter workers are hoping that the many Chihuahuas residing in their care can find homes in the New Year. With the help of Virgin and American Airlines, many of these homeless dogs can hopefully find homes on the East Coast which doesn't seem to be suffering from the same problem.

As they cruised at 35,000ft, most of the doggy passengers slept peacefully after posing for pictures and video footage that was posted live to Facebook using the aircraft’s wi-fi system. They occupied 15 seats, while around them sat paying customers.

“They were amazingly wellbehaved,” said Ms Katz, noting that only one of the canine travellers “had a little accident” mid-flight. “I shouldn’t say this but the dogs were quieter than some of the kids on the plane.”
