'Operation New Dawn': Operation Iraqi Freedom Rebranded

"Operation New Dawn" will be the new name for Operation Iraqi Freedom, the US military occupation of Iraq. However, simply changing the name from "Operation Iraqi Freedom" to "Operation New Dawn" doesn't change the dictionary definition of "quagmire", a point that has not been lost on military families. US troops have occupied Iraq since 2003.

This is not the first use of the name "Operation New Dawn", either: That moniker was the euphemized name for the 2004 Battle of Fallujah, in which US forces used chemical weapons against Iraqi insurgents. The name change, as per a memo from Defense Secretary Robert Gates, constitutes more of a rebranding than a true redeployment, as 100,000 troops currently occupy Iraq, and will remain until the end of 2011, or so we're told.

"The request... is approved to take effect 1 September 2010, coinciding with the change of mission for US forces in Iraq.

"Aligning the name change with the change of mission sends a strong signal that Operation Iraqi Freedom has ended and our forces are operating under a new mission," Gates wrote in the memo, first reported by ABC News.
