Opinion:The Democrats Definition of "Fairness"
The speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D.-CA.) was asked by John Grizzi, “Do you personally support revival of the ‘Fairness Doctrine?’” she said “Yes.”
The "fairness Doctrine": The policy of the United States Federal Communications Commission that became known as the "Fairness Doctrine" is an attempt to ensure that all coverage of controversial issues by a broadcast station be balanced and fair. The FCC took the view, in 1949, that station licensees were "public trustees," and as such had an obligation to afford reasonable opportunity for discussion of contrasting points of view on controversial issues of public importance. In order to avoid the requirement to go out and find contrasting viewpoints on every issue raised in a story, some journalists simply avoided any coverage of some controversial issues. This "chilling effect" was just the opposite of what the FCC intended. source
Remember when no one listened to AM radio? Broadcasters would put on garden shows or programs that were bland and boring so they wouldn't have to deal with the thought police of the FCC. When the Ronald Reagan Administration killed the "fairness Doctrine" AM radio exploded opening a whole new free market for talented commentators, all sorts of new programs popped up, opinion based with liberal or conservative views.
The problem for Democrats was that no one wanted to hear the Leftist anti- American craziness coming out of the mouths of the best the left can offer. Americans avoid on the most part negative unfunny liberal rants unless it is being shoved down their throats on Big Media outlets. The proof is that in an open battle where both sides had access to the masses the Liberal shows were utter failures. They are not as popular as the Conservative shows. The numbers are staggering. They can't compete in the open market.
Well if anyone can fix the Free Market it's Congress. right? Just like what most of what Congress does results in the opposite effect, the "Fairness Doctrine" is anything but fair.
"fairness" apparently means that each broadcaster must offer air time to anyone with a controversial view. Since it is impossible for every station to be monitored constantly, FCC regulators would arbitrarily determine what "fair access" is, and who is entitled to it, through selective enforcement. FCC officials found that the doctrine "had the net effect of reducing, rather than enhancing, the discussion of controversial issues of public importance," and therefore was in violation of constitutional principles. ("FCC Ends Enforcement of Fairness Doctrine," Federal Communications Commission News, Report No. MM-263, August 4, 1987.) source
So in the interest of "Fairness" the Democrats are ready to take us back to a 1949 law and perform a full assault on free speech. A law which history shows stifles free speech. Here in Miami we have conservative talk on 610 AM and liberal talk on 940 AM. I can choose to listen to either or none. This is the Congress America has voted for and deserve. It is the reason the approval ratings for Congress are around 17%. That includes both parties.
How un- American is the path these politicians seem to be on. They complain about rising gas prices when they are doing everything in their power to ensure the prices remain high. In fact most think gas prices are not high enough. Obama admitted that the other day. They say they support the troops but not the mission. How do you send young American soldiers into battle and at the same time say you oppose the battle you are sending them into? They tell you Global Warming will soon destroy the Planet and you must trash your SUV and drive a car they deem appropriate. Obama says we must reverse our progress because the World would not approve. He is against advancing any and all of Americas resources for energy independence in favor of resources that are not even viable yet.
The Left is feeling it's oats for the time being but the pendulum may swing back in the other direction with a vengeance. Obama plans to raise taxes on the most productive of Americans and businesses in the name of fairness. How fair is it for one American to confiscate as much money from another? How fair is it to tell an American who owns a business, works 14 hours a day raising a family to pay for the mistakes of Americans who signed a mortgage they knew was more than they could afford? How fair is it to separate Americans into those who are taxed and those who are not taxed? Targeting those who have realized the American dream of greed insinuating that they are different than the "working" American. There is nothing fair about the use of the word fair when coming out of the mouth of a Congress who wouldn't know what fair was if it hit them in the face...mpress

We should require that everyone call the Fairness Doctrine, the "Unfairness Doctrine". Then perhaps all persons of good will shall understand what it really means.
