So a major attempt by the control freaks of America goes down the tube. Can you believe it. Americans have the right to defend themselves from the scum infesting our streets? What a shame. Do you mean if someone breaks into my house to rape and pillage my family I can shoot them with my revolver? let me see. Bad news for criminals is bad news for Democrats. Good news for terrorists is good news for Democrats. I think I’m getting the hang of this Supreme Court thing.
WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices’ first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history. The Constitution does not permit “the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home,” Scalia said. The court also struck down Washington’s requirement that firearms be equipped with trigger locks or kept disassembled, but left intact the licensing of guns. source
The Democrats in their obsession to emulate Europe who have disarmed themsevles to the point they depend on America to protect them at the same time dissing our soldiers has failed. mpress, I like this story. It's good stuff. Good first step for DC, Many murders happen on the street. Citizens need their full rights restored.

It's worth pointing out, though, that, by carrying a gun, one will not turn into Chow Yun Fat and suddenly be able to take down the bad guy, particularly if an assailant who's already brandishing a weapon besets you: you'll have to decide very, very quickly if you want the situation to turn from robbery to kill-or-be-killed, and whomever is attacking you will already have his/her weapon out.
Would-be gun owners need to understand that, over time, they're more dangerous to themselves with their weapons than to a hypothetical burglar, particularly if they don't use trigger locks and if they don't get some training*, and that hitting a moving target with a handgun is far more difficult than it looks... it's a huge responsibility, especially if you have kids in the home.
* I recommend a trip to the shooting range, even if you don't want to/plan to own a gun: it's useful to separate the myth from the reality when it comes to how these things work, and (speaking as a guy) it's kinda fun to shoot stuff in a controlled environment.

Gun owners aren't nostalgic for the Wild, Wild West we see in movies (OK, some are). I think that the vast majority of gun owners realize that owning a gun is a huge responsibility. I have a little .22 rifle (it doesn't even knock down an empty water bottle in the desert, kidding, sort of) and it is locked up with something that snakes through the chamber.
As far as intruders are concerned we have an old, smelly dog that will absolutely repulse any intruder. (The 90 pound chocolate Labrador will probably just sleep through the whole thing). But, and I haven't tried this, I bet that if I confronted the intruder with the unloaded rifle he would probably go onesies in his pants.

As for me, I just need to chamber a round in my 12 gauge defender, that is a sound that is universal to anyone with half a brain, and guaranteed they would go onesies and twosies Pronto!! Though I have a rather scary assortment of Compound and Recurve Bows at home and some nasty looking razor sharp broadheads that'll scare the beejeezus out of any intruder who sees me aiming one at his head, more so than a gun!

Jordan, Good point here. Just owning a gun does not ensure ones safety. In the military the element of surprise is most effective. I have been shot at. Before I could respond the whole thing was over. Plus I shook like a leaf and couldn't have hit a thing if I did shoot back. Weapons take training and practice or it is a waste. If anyone has ever been punched by a would be robber. These guys know how to use surprise. I have two arms but again, I would be unable to respond.
I like having my three dogs as a first line of defence. If they want to continue after my dogs chase them... they need to be shot. Killing another human, no matter how justified, will effect one emotionally and for a long duration. Because I beleive in the right, does not mean, I want to use my weapon. I would rather a situation resolve itself without violence.
The problem in DC, and the high courts oral arguments did not deal with this, is if you carry a weapon in DC, you are a criminal. Law abiding citizens are at a disadvantage in the streets. This ruling only related to a hand gun in ones home. The arguments also mentioned self defense.

I own, more than one.My belief is that anyone who owns a gun should be required to take a 4-hour orientation session, to include how to use it, the laws in that area and how to secure it safely.
Here in OK with a background check and a full day of schooling anyone with a clean record can carry a concealed weapon. Note: concealed really isn't as big a deal as it sounds. If, say, I'm traveling at night and I have a big tote bag, my gun can be in my tote bag instead of out. Simple.
Of course, criminals won't go to school. Then again, most criminals get their guns illegally one way or the other.
And don't think for a minute that having a gun doesn't make a difference. I had a home invader one time. When confronted with a steady weapon and crisp command, the gentleman in question peed his pants and the situation was secured.
I was so relieved--and surprised--to read of the Court's decision. Yes, we have the right to bear arms. Just because some people are idiots about using that right doesn't mean we all should lose it.
If we lost the right to drive cars because some people are idiot drivers and some drive drunk or drugged, people wouldn't accept that. But cars are deadly--they kill a lot of people. A car is nothing more than a guided missile with explosive onboard. So I never got the logic of wanting to stop gun ownership for safety reasons but never applying that to cars.

The funniest thing about it is that I'm a very small woman, and well known in general as just a "sweet little lady." (Which cracks me up somehow.) I've had guys, even workmen, fuss over me being careful in today's world, etc. etc. Then if I have to schedule work or activities around riding with the cops (sweet sweet guys) they just don't know what to think! ;} One of my cop buddies told me to laminate the target and hang it on the front door..... LOL!

Bottom line is the control freaks lost. The desire for people in crime free zones who take limos to work with security and are busy trying to deny the average home owner the right to defend himself in his own home failed. The scary thing is that they almost took that right away. All I need is some metro-sexual liberal telling me having a gun as a law abiding citizen in my home might backfire. Well I am willing to take that chance...If the bleeding hearts had won you would see media outlets screaming to confiscate Americans guns. They would have to bring the swat team to take my Glock 40 away.

Good point. The would be criminal has to wonder in SC, does he/she have a gun? In DC, no problem. Even with this ruling one still cannot have a conceal permit.

mpress, I like this story. It's good stuff. Hey, you have to protect yourself, when your life is in danger, it is either you or him, as far as I am concerned, I would rather be the one after shooting someone and standing in front of a judge and jury explaining my actions than the criminal doing it, cause I am dead!
Like Jordan says, carrying a gun doesn't turn you into a superhero/chow yun fat, shooting someone can be devastating , but if your life is truly in danger, one day you'll get over it! For me those days are behind me, I use a microscope, Ghost wipes, assorted chemicals and my electronic sampling and testing equipment to fight crime. Though I have my Superman cape somewhere in a suitcase somewhere.
