Opposition MP receives bullet in the mail
An Opposition MP in Malaysia this afternoon received a live bullet and a written note enclosed in an envelope addressed to him at his office.
Mr Karpal Singh, 68, who is the Chairman of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and a veteran Member of Parliament (MP) now for the Bukit Gelugor constituency viewed this as a death threat on his life on receiving the 9mm bullet and note which was written in Malay.
The note said: "Karpal Singh, Don't you try to question the privileges of the Malays. Don't you try to question the powers of the Malay Rulers. If you do not stop, this bullet will be embedded on your forehead. Remember this Bengali! Do not forget! This is your first warning!!!.
The bullet and the note enclosed in an envelope was hand delivered by a courier who came wearing a full faced helmet and was left with the receptionist at his office. He then hurriedly left on a motorcycle.
Mr Karpal Singh made a report at the local police station as he viewed this threat seriously. He was accompanied there by his son, Gobind Singh, also an MP who was recently elected for the Puchong constituency, together with a few other MPs.
My personal note to readers:
In Malaysia it is a general consensus among the citizens to avoid touching on issues related to (i) religion, in particular, Islam (ii) race (iii) royalty (the King & Sultans) and others matters that are considered ''sensitive'' or that would disrupt the peace and harmony of this mutliracial, multicultural & multireligious nation..
Mr Karpal Singh who is a lawyer by profession and has his own lawyer firm together with his sons, is known by the nickname of 'The Tiger of Jelutong'. He was at one time a six term MP for the constituency of Jelutong in the northern state of Penang during his career as a politician.
He is very vocal and fearless both in the court rooms as well as in Parliament.

Herbert Wong, I like this story. Can you tell us a bit more about the MP's stance, and why he would have received the bullet? Is this common?

Hi Rachel, the MP believes that it is politically motivated. There exists a certain racial group who are not too happy with him on raising and questioning the issues of Malay rights & the Malay rulers. I will try to explain further on that in my update. Am working on that. !
